Do you spend 40-plus hours a week at a desk? There’s no reason why this space needs to stay sterile, cluttered, and sad. Make the following spirit-lifting changes to brighten up that (work) day.
Personalize it. Bring in framed photos of loved ones. Not only can smiling faces encourage you through a long day, but they’ll also make you feel at home even when you’re not. Instead of keeping the standard background, set your computer’s desktop image and screen saver with shots of a favorite vacation spot or dream destination to invoke happy thoughts.
Brighten it. Spruce up a blank space with fresh flowers. Find long-lasting blooms to add life to a lifeless desk and also provide clean air. Seek out several types that thrive in fluorescently lit offices including African violets, begonias, and ferns.
Speaking of lighting, add a desk lamp with an incandescent, "warm white" bulb, which is softer on your eyes than cool and fluorescent overheads.
Organize it. Instead of stacks of notes, put up a small bulletin board to keep reminders and written inspirations organized. Bring in brightly colored mugs, glasses, or trays to hold pens, mints, and a bottle of your favorite St. Ives lotion to add calmness where clutter lived before.
