Mandy Moore Helping Cats Nationwide

Mandy Moore Wants to Take the "Crazy" Out of Crazy Cat Lady

Mandy Moore considers herself a huge "cat lover, cat person, cat advocate, cat supporter," but she wants to take the "crazy" out of cat lady. "I feel like there's this terrible reputation about people who love cats," says Mandy. "We're cat people, and we can be modern and cool, and maybe slightly hip, so I'm trying to create a new definition for what it is to be a cat person."

And cat people, she and her husband, rocker Ryan Adams, most certainly are.

The singer-songwriter duo have rescued no fewer than four indoor cats and three outdoor cats. Mandy told us that the rescued feral outdoor cats "live a pretty cushy life." It's probably the cat furniture and special freeze-dried treats they get regularly, along with indoor kitties Vincent, Theo, Addison, and Maddie.

"They are equally impressed with freeze-dried chicken and freeze-dried salmon. They are obsessed. I mean it's, like, just freeze-dried fish but it's like drugs to them! They fiend for it!"

Purina Cat Chow Building Better Lives Campaign

Mandy has been an active animal advocate for years. She grew up with cats and has an innate passion for pets — from helping animals get rescued and adopted to raising awareness about pet care throughout the country.

"For me, it's a pretty organic thing to want to be a part of. We support local shelters where we got our own pets from and help with donations and products on their wish list to keep the rescues up and running."

Now Mandy is working with Purina Cat Chow to raise money for cat shelters all over the country. Purina Cat Chow has donated $275,000 to 50 different cat shelters in the US — one in every state.

By using the hashtag #MyRescueStory, Mandy and the Building Better Lives campaign are working to call other pet-lovers to action by sharing their own animal rescue stories and encouraging others to follow suit. If 1,500 people share their stories on social media using the hashtag, then Purina will donate an additional $50,000 to the Petfinder Foundation.

The Purina Cat Chow Building Better Lives program wants to raise general awareness about cat adoption and support people out there who do great work for animal organizations — and with this initiative, anyone can help.

Sheriff Callie's Wild West and Upcoming Album With Husband Ryan Adams

So, in addition to putting her passion for cats to good use, what else is Mandy up to these days?

She currently voices the animated heroine Sheriff Callie, the Annie Oakley-inspired star of Sheriff Callie's Wild West, a children's show on Disney Junior.

"I get to play a cat with a cowboy hat and a sparkly horse as my sidekick, so taking the role was kind of a no-brainer," Mandy said.

"I liked the idea of being able to sing songs — I love doing voice-over work. It's a lot of fun, and I feel like you can employ a sort of childlike mentality of getting to play around and create a world in your head before it's animated and created," said Mandy, who voiced Rapunzel in 2010 in Disney's Tangled.

"You feel like a kid and go to work and get paid for it."

Mandy music fans can also get pumped for a new album in the works.

"I'm making music right now with my husband, and hopefully we'll get a record recorded sometime this Summer — that's the goal at least!"
