Pampered Pals: iCool Pet Mats

The dog days of Summer have arrived and I'm looking for the latest way to cherish (and cool off) my hot dog – I think I've found just the thing! The new iCool Pet Mats ($25) come in two colors (blue and pink), two shapes (rectangle and oval), and two sizes for those pets large and small. When I first spotted this product I thought it was a gigantic ice pack but, turns out, you just add water and an absorbing polymer creates this soft, gel-like mat to keep pup cool – no refrigeration needed!

We have a larger cooling mat called Canine Cooler for our Wheaten Terrier. She loves it! You fill it with water also but it doesn't have to be cold - it only needs to be a few degrees cooler than your dog's body temperature. The mat actually absorbs the heat from your dog, keeping it cool, unlike laying on a floor where the heat tranfers into the floor and then back into your dog. It takes a few days for your dog to "find" the mat but once found it will get a lot of use. I even bring it outside if I am working in the yard, put it in a shady spot and she lays right on it! I highly recommend! We got ours on line from america outdoors and shipping was free!

My mom has something like this for her dogs that she uses when she goes to dog shows in the summer. It's really neat and it keeps them cool for a couple of hours. I might get one similar to this for my dog because she gets so hot in the summer that she goes to the basement and lays on the concrete to cool down.

My long haired cat would love this. She loves to lounge in front of fans and the ac.

I'd like to know if anyone has one. I am worried about Sadie getting into the thing and getting the gel out.

I would get this for my cats. I already give them ice cubes in their water bowls when it's miserably hot, and this seems like it would help make them more comfy, too.

I know of a larger versions that are more expensive. If any of you try it, please let us know how your pup likes it! I was hoping to hear whether the dog's own body heat causes the mat to "lose its cool", so to speak.

I might actually consider this. It's SO hot here, B-Bop hates it. Also I keep the AC at like 82 (and my electric bill was still over $200) so it's never like COOL in our house. He lays on the tile because it's the coolest part, but I know he'd LOVE soemthing like this.
