Pet Allergy Signs

10 Signs of Seasonal Allergies in Pets

Spring is the season for allergy flare-ups for many humans, but what about pets? My pal Samson suffers from some droopy, goopy eyes and itchy, red paws that clued his owner into his dilemma. If you're not sure whether a pooch has an issue like this, check out 10 signs of skin or allergy problems:

  • Constant paw licking
  • Rubbing body against objects/floor
  • Excessive scratching or chewing fur
  • Hair loss
  • Change in odor
  • Redness of fur and skin rashes
  • Flaky or greasy coat
  • Drippy eyes
  • Runny nose
  • Increased sneezing and wheezing

While it's true that a variety of illnesses can cause these symptoms, if you see several of them at the same time, now is a good time to take your pet to the vet to get checked for a clean bill of health!

@kismekate - It depends. If you're dog is scratching more, brush out their coat more. You might also want to give them a bath more often (I give Zena a bath once a month for allergy reasons and because that's when she starts to stink!). Brush more if they develop a different odor or their coat gets greasy! For paws, try washing their paws; make sure their paws are dry before they go out. For runny noses, itchy ears and runny eyes, you need to go to the vet to have them checked out. Zena has "itchy ear syndrome" (i.e. her ears get inflamed and itch) so they get cleaned every week and get an anti-inflammatory medicine. Runny eyes generally get an ointment (Zena has one for her right eye). Red or flaky skin is easy. Put on a thin layer of good ol' Vaseline. If that doesn't help, go to the vet. They'll prescribe you a cream. Hope that helps!

Ooo my pup has all of these currently. I thought it was her food so I've been trying to switch it up -- but it looks like it's allergies instead! What do they prescribe dogs in this case?
