Reader Ellenora tells of her sweet dog Zena in our Pet Profiles series. Chronicle your own pet stories in our Pet Profiles group!
PetSugar: When did you get your dog and what's her breed?
Ellenora: We adopted Zena June 24, 2007, two weeks after my Jack Russell/Rat Terrier, Kimo, died of congestive heart failure. We saw her photo on the Internet a few days after Kimo's death and knew Kimo led us to her. She's 78.9% Decker Terrier and 21.1% Rat Terrier. Since I get so many questions about her and she's commonly mistaken as a Basenji, I created a FAQ page on my OnSugar blog covering her breed and general questions.
PetSugar: What's your daily doggie routine?
Ellenora: Zena lives a life of luxury. Decker Terriers and Rat Terriers have the standard terrier personality with a twist--they tend to nap A LOT. She's a bit like a EKG reading. She flatlines (i.e. sleeps) most of the day and has occasional bursts of energy. She even sleeps when she's sunbathing! I take her out on a 20-30 minute walk when the weather is nice. Midwestern winters are notoriously brutal and Zena's as big of a cold wimp as the rest of the family!

PetSugar: What's your dog’s favorite food, pastime, and treat?
Ellenora: If I had to choose a favorite food for Zena, it's definitely cheese. Generally though, she'll eat anything that's warm like chicken, pasta, corn and carrots. She also likes Granny Smith Apple slices and raw green peppers. Aside from sleeping, her favorite pastime is to massacre her stuffed toys, particularly if it's a bunny. She's destroyed nine stuffed bunnies at least. Let's just say her hatred of bunnies in not limited to the stuffed variety.
PetSugar: What was your all-time favorite moment with your dog?
Ellenora: It's hard to pick just one favorite moment; she's a goof ball. The one memory that stands out is her first St. Nicholas Day here. My dad accidentally forgot to get her a toy for her stocking and she destroyed my high school mascot in retaliation (well, the stuffed toy version anyway)! I actually wrote an English composition paper focusing on profiling someone (or something) on the entire event and my peer workshop group could not stop laughing. She provides endless amusement.
PetSugar: Anything else we should know about your dog?
Ellenora: Zena prefers the company of humans, not other dogs. She charms every human she meets, even the staunchest cat lovers. She doesn't like male dogs except Max the Beagle. She has two dog BFFs--Ally the Husky/German Shepherd and Kelsey the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. Aside from being a hunter/watchdog/companion, her other job is being my informal (i.e. not trained) disability dog. I have high-functioning Autism and need a lot of help socializing in environments other than my comfort zones like home, the library, Petsmart and school. Since dogs make me feel more relaxed and Zena's a people magnet, I have more opportunities to learn to socialize with people, not other animals.
