Quiz: What Do You Know About Parvo?

Parvo is a highly contagious viral illness that infects — and can kill — our four-legged friends. I've gathered up some facts so test yourself and see if you're suprised with the results.

6/8. A friend of mine lost her puppy to Parvo, even when the shelter she came from supposedly vaccinated for it. They were shut down after her family called the Humane Society and showed them labs that proved the dog had never been vaccinated.

7/8. I guessed on all of them and missed the one I thought I knew for sure (the Oprah one). Aren't respiratory and pulmonary the same?

Parvovirus is no joke. Puppies can be dead within 48 hours if untreated. In the right conditions, parvo can survive on inanimate objects like food dishes, blankets, and concrete for months. You should NEVER let your puppy run around in public areas or take them for walks around town until they've been vaccinated. Even if your puppy has been vaccinated once or twice, it can still get parvo. They MUST complete the vaccination series to be fully protected. It's a completely preventable disease, and heartbreaking to watch a puppy die from it.

That picture is a little, um, odd, Pet ! The shelter I volunteer at had a Parvo outbreak -- it's no joke. We had to quarantine the nursery and scrub it down.
