I have never had a pet, but adopting an older dog does sound like a good option for a first-timer like me.

I adopted an older dog from a local breed rescue group. I love puppies like everyone but my golden girl is house trained, walks on a leash, is well socialized and doesn't rampage through the house destroying things when she's bored. I personally recommend adopting an older pet.
