The Scoop: These Booties Were Made for Walkin'

The Scoop: These Booties Were Made for Walkin'

In addition to keeping paws protected from the cold and chemicals, dog booties have a new purpose in Duesseldorf, Germany – protecting pups from pub-related injuries. Because of a high rate of on-the-job injuries, all 20 police dogs are being trained to walk in plastic fiber shoes to protect them from the broken beer bottles. Even with street cleaning, the little pieces of glass get caught in the cobblestones, deeply pierce paw pads, and bring crime fighting to a bloody halt. These look like a very secure cinching, velcro-topped version . . . once you get them on, that is. What's better yet, the force didn't choose just any old shoes – the dogs' booties were ordered in blue to match the officers' uniforms. How thoughtful!

I have those boots for my dog! We use them when it's really cold and icy here in the winter, because he gets snow packed up inside his paws and his feet get too cold to stay out long. Very smart idea to use to protect their paws from glass!

Good thinking, and I'm glad they did something about it.

It's so sad that they were getting cut so much that they had to protect them. Those poor dogs. :( I'm glad they have protection now. That dog requires hugs immediately. I hope wherever he is, he's getting them. :)

aw that's cute!! my dog was having problems getting up off the floor (bad hips) so our vet recommended buying baby socks with rubber grippers on the bottom and putting them on her paws. i about died with laughter when i watched her prance around like a horse with them on haha. yeah, they didn't last long, but i hope the booties work out for the police dogs!!!
