Shocking Reasons Cats Are Dumped in Shelters

The Scoop: Shocking Reasons Cats Were Dumped in Shelters

I could never ever imagine giving up my four-legged baby and I know that all of you feel the same about your precious pets, which makes this news even more infuriating. I caught a recent UK Daily Mail story about some shocking reasons cats are being dumped into the local animal shelters.

The RSPCA in West London bares all when trying to find forever homes for the unwanted felines, including listing why the now homeless kitties were brought to them. Reasons for giving up some of these beautiful cats range from having too long of a coat, not matching the owner's new carpet, and not wanting to pay a $10 a day cat sitter fee while they hit the beach for a vacay. I can't imagine how anyone could give up an animal because of these reasons, but apparently some people just don't have a heart. What's more, the number of animals left abandoned in the RSPCA's care rose 23 percent last year to leave 7,347 pets without homes which makes it even more important to extend your love to a shelter animal, but to first make absolutely sure you are ready for the responsibilities of a pet!

Ugg, this makes me so sick. People can be so selfish and stupid sometimes.

I couldn't just get rid of my baby unless I 10000000000000045897699845498% had to. (Actually, my cat is here rubbing my leg right now). I got my cat from the SPCA at a PetSmart in my town.... she was 2 when I got her and I found out that her previous family just left her out in the woods! She was declawed in the front too (this was awhile ago, I don't think declawing is legal anymore is it? ). Such a nice "family" she had before. Makes me sad for what she had to go through =( *sorry if my comment doesn't make sense with the article...I couldn't read it :( *

One of the local animal rescue places here "the animal people" has their animals at Petsmart on the weekends, I go and look sometimes (even though i have my allowed quota) and i read thier "stories" they have on the cages, and some of them are downright pathetic and i wish i could track down these former owners and put them in a cage Here are some i Have seen: *got rid of cat (persian) because it no longer was placing at shows *it was their daughters cat and she went to college *owners were moving and the place didnt accept pets

That's what happens when people treat animals as possessions, instead of living creatures that need to be taken care of. It breaks my heart. I wonder what Paris Hilton's excuses are?

Same here, DarlingDA. I have family members fighting over who gets them if something ever happens. I think they half hope something will, sometimes!

If I can't keep Ladybird (my doxie), then she does to my parents or my sister. Before even getting a puppy I checked with them and wanted to have a contigency plan in case anything went wrong, like I got really sick (as in, in the hospital).

I think it's wonderful that the UK organization is sharing all that information... I know some people who are afraid to adopt because they don't know the extent to why the animal was given up in the first place. And Jude C- love your use of asterisk :)

well I hope these people don't do the same thing with their kids if they have any...that's so dumb, dumping your pet because they dont match something is ridiculous.

Ugh! Some people are too damn selfish to live. When I was little in Taiwan*, there were tons of stray dogs roaming the streets because the owners would adopt them as puppies, often for their children, and then just ditch them when a) they realized puppies aren't toys and need care and attention, or b) the puppies grew up and became not-puppies. So heartbreaking. (*I don't know if this is still a problem there now.)

We were just told a few weeks ago we could get a cat for our apt. and I made sure we would adopt one, and I'm so glad we did after reading that. I wanted to take them all home with us but unfortunately could bring home one. So sad!!
