Super-Cute Video: Baby Belugas Blowing Bubbles

Sing it with me: Baaaa-by Be-luuuuga. Am the only one getting flashbacks to childhood whenever I see pictures of Beluga Whales? Anyway, the endangered mammals are best recognized by their distinctive white color and large foreheads (forget "fivehead" . . . more like twenty-fivehead). Prominent noggins or not, they are pretty cute . . . especially when blowing bubbles. Check it out in the video below!

Yeah, Bucha. Sadly, ignorance is bliss for some. Believe me, I do NOT take the harm out of the picture, but I would hope that if enough people learn about them and their plight in the wild, then perhaps it would wake them up. Just trying to be optimistic, but not forgetting about the fight. What is the best alternative? Any effort against this is important, including strong international pressure, but it seems like getting the Japanese population angry about it would be pretty positive too. I definitely would rather see them in the wild than at a place like this, but I don't want to assume that these keepers are ill-intentioned without knowing more about their facility. Unfortunately, we are to the point where captive breeding programs are essential for the survival of some species, especially programs that release animals back into the wild :). I am strongly against some of the care in zoos, etc., especially some of the theme parks that keep wild animals (I will not go to our local Six Flags Marine World because of some of the things that have come out about them, particularly about the care of their elephants). Cruelty in disguise is a terrible thing, and it certainly exists, but I just wanted to point out that genuine efforts could have a positive impact.

Ladyr i think you are right. But i think if cruelty happens in a society and the society isnt about to change that, than the whole society is guilty of that cruelty. I know from some of my japanese friends that there are animal activists too, but most people in japan seem to just look away. Ignorance is bliss, right?! The question is if and for how long the education will last. I mean there are whale-species out there counting only 1000 whales, worldwide and they are still free to be hunted. Quite shocking, dont you think. For my taste, you take the harm out of the picture and paint it too cute. Cruelty in disguise. EVEN though those Belugas are toooo cute, but i'd find them cuter running wild in freedom.

Bucha, I do not speak Japanese, so I don't know what the keeper said, but in general there are many Japanese people who are against hunting whales, so I don't think it is hypocritical for anyone to try and foster a love of whales in Japanese children. An important step in protecting wildlife is educating children. Teaching children to appreciate and value wild animals will help create a more environmentally conscious population who will hopefully fight to eliminate practices that threaten wild populations. Oh, and those Belugas are soooo cute!

Dont get me wrong, the Belugas are totally adorable. But isnt it a bit hypercritical for a nation hunting wales and eating them and on the other hand saving (if my japanese failed then the keeper said something about the educational aspect in those shows) them by that? But they are adorable anyway. I want a miniture one or at least a beachhouse ;)
