Spygate

The New England Patriots found themselves in hot water in 2007 when the New York Jets said that the Patriots had filmed their defensive coordinator's signals from an on-field position during a game. Following the allegations, known as "Spygate," the video camera was confiscated, coach Bill Belichick apologized and was fined $500,000, and the team was fined $250,000.

Belichick was not suspended, and the commissioner explained the punishment in a letter to the team, saying, "I believe that the discipline I am imposing of a maximum fine and forfeiture of a first-round draft choice, or multiple draft choices, is in fact more significant and long-lasting, and therefore more effective, than a suspension."
