Glee's Mark Salling Talks About How Cory Monteith's Death Affects the Final Season
Mark Salling on Cory Monteith and Glee's Final Season

Though it's been over a year since Glee star Cory Monteith died, his presence is still very much missed on the set. Mark Salling (aka Noah "Puck" Puckerman) is returning to the show for its final season, and in an interview with People, he spoke about his late friend: "Cory Monteith was a great leader as a character and person in real life," he said. "It's a big, obvious hole. I still think about him all the time. He was kind of like the quarterback of the show, which sounds cliché because the [tribute] episode was called that, but he was kind of like that in real life." Despite the passing time, Salling doesn't think filming the final season will offer any closure on Monteith's death: "I don't think there will be any closure. Not yet." Glee's final season will premiere on Jan. 9, 2015, and consist of 13 episodes.

Cory Monteith would have turned 32 years old on Sunday. To honor her late boyfriend, Lea Michele took to Twitter to share sweet words and a happy memory. "The biggest heart and most beautiful smile.. In all of our hearts.. We love you so. Happy Birthday," she tweeted. The accompanying photo shows Cory smiling and looking down as Lea laughs and covers her mouth with her hand. On Friday, Cory's mom, Ann McGregor, reflected on the day she gave birth to her son. "Maybe it is a blessing that Cory's birthday is on Mother's Day," she tweeted.

It's been nearly 10 months since Cory's sudden death. At her Louder album listening party in March, Lea discussed channeling her emotions into her new music. "A lot of people don't know how to touch this situation. It's like walking on eggshells. So I felt 'Cannonball' was the perfect first single, because it kinda puts it all out there. It's, like, this is really hard. We're not denying that it's hard. We're going to get through it."

Lea Michele "Only Has Happy Memories of Cory"
Lea Michele "Only Has Happy Memories of Cory"

It's been less than a year since the death of Lea Michele's longtime boyfriend Cory Monteith, but she's been both strong and candid about her grieving process in the months since. Lea shared his final four words to her with the world by penning the emotional track "If You Say So" for her debut album, which comes out today, March 4. She opened up to Seventeen about what that date means to her and life after Cory in the April issue, though the talk shifted gears to also include a few carefree quotes about how she likes hanging out naked in her backyard. Pick up the magazine on newsstands March 11, and read more from Lea in Seventeen below:

  • On feeling confident with her body: "I'm very comfortable with my own body. I come from Broadway — everybody's naked on Broadway. I like to think of myself as more granola. I'm not going to run around naked or anything like that unless I'm at my own home. Today, I walked into my backyard and was standing out there naked for a while. Don't tell: my neighbors will freak out!"
  • On that rumored Glee spinoff: "Let's do it. I think it could be Rachel living in New York and working on Broadway!"
  • On why she kept filming Glee after Cory's death: "[The Glee cast] is the greatest group of people I have ever met in my entire life! We all lost Cory. I didn't think for one minute that being away from them was what I wanted. Being on the set of Glee is no more difficult than being at home and finding [Cory's] slippers under the bed. We had a life and a job together — it goes with you everywhere you go; you can't get away from grief. So I might as well be surrounded by the people I love and get to lean on them."
  • On finding true love: "I only have happy memories of Cory. He was not his addiction — unfortunately, it won. But that wasn't who he was. Cory made me feel like a queen every day. From the minute he said, 'I'm your boyfriend,' I loved every day, and I thank him for being the best boyfriend and making me feel so beautiful."
  • On remembering Cory through her future journeys: "My album is coming out on March 4 — which is bizarre, like it's meant to be. Just think about it: we're going to 'March fourth.' We're going to march forth like a 'Cannonball.' I try my best to march forth and live my life as best as I can for me. I also feel an incredible, happy responsibility to keep the memory and light of [Cory, who] was the most amazing person. I'm so happy to make it my journey now to continue on and live my life as best as I can."
  • On her inspirations for her debut album: "I set out to make a really pop-heavy album that was fun and empowering — I love Katy Perry and Kelly Clarkson! But then I found myself picking and writing these songs that were very emotional and dramatic. Louder has songs that express extreme love and some pain. I look at it and think, 'That was my year.' I didn't record any songs that I didn't completely relate to."

Listen to Lea Michele's Tender "If You Say So" For Cory Monteith
Lea Michele "If You Say So" Video

"It's been seven whole days since you lost your fight," begins Lea Michele's new track, "If You Say So." The song, about her late boyfriend, Cory Monteith, continues, "The fallen hero haunts my thoughts — how could you leave me this way?" In all honesty, the track (from Michele's latest album, Louder) is devastating. The actress-singer previously released "You're Mine," dedicated to Monteith, but this song is written about his passing, and it's clearly more personal. Listen below.

Lea Michele's latest track from Louder has been released, and it's really touching. The song, "You're Mine," is dedicated to her late ex, Cory Monteith. The actress has been mourning publicly since his death in July 2013, and Lea recently told Elle that this track was one of Cory's favorites before he passed. The lyrics are particularly heartbreaking:

"You're mine, for life
And I'll be by your side
We are entwined
You're mine, for life
Hold me until we die
I'm yours, and you are mine"

This Is How Glee Would Have Ended
Glee's Original Ending With Cory Monteith

Before Glee star Cory Monteith's tragic death in July, Ryan Murphy had a plan for how the show would end. In an excerpt from Murphy's eulogy for Monteith, published by Entertainment Weekly, Murphy divulged how the show was always supposed to conclude:

"The ending of Glee is something I have never shared with anyone, but I always knew it. I've always relied on it as a source of comfort, a North Star. At the end of season six, Lea [Michele]'s Rachel was going to have become a big Broadway star, the role she was born to play. Finn was going to have become a teacher, settled down happily in Ohio, at peace with his choice and no longer feeling like a Lima loser. The very last line of dialogue was to be this: Rachel comes back to Ohio, fulfilled and yet not, and walks into Finn's glee club. 'What are you doing here?' he would ask. 'I'm home,' she would reply. Fade out. The end."

Glee is scheduled to end after next season, the show's sixth.

Lea Opens Up on Cory's Death: "You Don't Have to Lose Yourself"
Lea Michele Interview About Cory Monteith | Elle Dec. 2013

Lea Michele is slowly starting to open up about the recent and unexpected passing of her boyfriend and Glee costar, Cory Monteith. In the December issue of Elle, which hits newsstands on Nov. 19, Lea reveals her current mental state and how she hopes that she can use Cory's death to help other people in similar situations. “I never thought I would be in this position in my whole life," Lea said. "Now that I am in this position, you can choose to rise, and that’s what I’m going to try to do. I know that Cory would want nothing more than for me to take this situation and use it to help people.” She added, “It’s very hard. And you have to be very strong to come out of this alive, but I think by doing the best for myself, by showing that you don’t have to lose yourself, maybe someone else will feel some sort of strength or comfort.”

While Lea is hoping to comfort others with her resilience, she also revealed that she got help from an unexpected source in the days following Cory's death. Glee guest star Kate Hudson opened up her LA home to Lea and her family so that she could avoid the media that had gathered outside of her own home. Lea said, “I called [Kate] and said, ‘I don’t know where I’m going to go because my house is swarmed [with reporters].’ She was like, ‘Oh, you’re going to stay at my house.’ Like it was nothing. No one knew I was there. I’ll never really be able to thank her, truly, for what she did for me.”
