Pilot Scoop: Hawaii Five-0

I've been picking apart Fall's TV offerings by reviewing each of the brand-new pilots.

I've been picking apart Fall's TV offerings by reviewing each of the brand-new pilots. Today's pick takes us to the tropics for the cop drama reboot Hawaii Five-0.

What it's about: Former Navy lieutenant Steve McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin) returns to Hawaii to investigate his father's murder. He takes the position as the head of a new police team, partnered with newbie Danny Williams (Scott Caan). Straitlaced McGarrett and wisecracking single dad Caan butt heads at first, but quickly realize that they work well together with their forces combined. Rounding out their team is local resident Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim) and his kickass cousin Kono (Grace Park). After cracking their first case together, they're already a family.

Where it works: The show may be a reboot, but you'd never be able to tell (other than the iconic theme song, of course); the show is fresh, fast-paced, and has an interesting hodge-podge of likable characters. O'Loughlin is a bit stiff but boy is he easy on the eyes, and his buddy chemistry with Scott Caan couldn't be better. Of course the gorgeous scenery doesn't hurt either.

Where it doesn't: The guys succeed in capturing their first bad guy by the end of the episode, and I assume there won't be a ton of continuity from one episode to the next. With so many other cop dramas out there, it might be hard to get viewers addicted to a show that doesn't require weekly viewings.

Am I hooked? l'll definitely be coming back for more, but I do fear that the episodes may end up at the bottom of my DVR list.

Hawaii Five-0 Brings Lots of Theme Song Talk, Leis to the TCA

The TCA is underway with today's CBS panels, and there's no question that the network's new heavy hitter is Hawaii Five-0.

The TCA is underway with today's CBS panels, and there's no question that the network's new heavy hitter is Hawaii Five-0. Alex O'Loughlin and Scott Caan (aka the new McGarrett and Danno) took the stage, though the critics were a lot more curious about staying true to the original signature theme song.

  • First things first: the showrunners and cast want to make it abundantly clear that this is a reboot. Not a remake, not a sequel, but a reboot, meaning that they aren't picking up where the original left off, and they are taking some creative liberties and putting a fresh spin on the old favorite (which apparently means it's not a remake).
  • As for researching for their roles, Scott Caan said he wanted to start fresh with the new script but Alex O'Loughlin did a little digging, and remembers the show from his youth.
  • Speaking of O'Loughlin, he's really hoping that his latest venture will be a hit after a string of failed TV shows. He said, "There's a reason things work or don't work on television, and I don't know what the answer is, I just keep wandering on and hoping..." However, it does sound like he's got confidence in the new series: "If this one doesn't go, I'm completely bewildered. I have no idea how television works at all."
  • Caan, on the other hand, spent some time contemplating whether he was ready to make the switch to TV after mostly doing movies. He quipped: "I think I do better work on this than what I'd done in the last 10 years in movies."

To find out how the guys will measure up against the originals and why costar Daniel Dae Kim is the unofficial "mayor" of Waikiki, just keep reading.

Fall TV Spotlight: Hawaii Five-0

It's hard to believe that we're already nearing the end of June, which means that Fall is slowly creeping up on us.

It's hard to believe that we're already nearing the end of June, which means that Fall is slowly creeping up on us. OK, not really, but it's still fun to predict the future, and I've been helping you figure out which new shows you'll be DVRing in a few months. Today I'm bringing you some insight into CBS's reboot of Hawaii Five-0.

  • Who's in it: Scott Caan and Alex O'Loughlin (The Back-Up Plan) are joined by Lost's Daniel Dae Kim (Jin lives!) and Battlestar Galactica's Grace Park.
  • What it's about: A new team of cops fightin' crime in — wait for it — Hawaii.
  • Why it caught my attention: Reboots are always buzz-y, so I'll be watching to see if this one can live up to the hype. And there's also the fact that Alex O'Loughlin takes his shirt off in the preview. I might be in love.
  • Show most likely to: Have the best visual backdrop and gorgeous scenery.

Check out the preview after the jump.

Mark Wahlberg Toasts Entourage's Seventh Successful Season

The boys of Entourage got together last night to premiere their seventh season in LA.

The boys of Entourage got together last night to premiere their seventh season in LA. Adrian Grenier posed with the rest of the crew Kevin Connolly, Kevin Dillon, and Jerry Ferrara, while Jeremy Piven faithfully tweeted from red carpet. The series's producer, Mark Wahlberg, left the kids at home to enjoy a night out with his wife Rhea Durham and support his beloved Boston Celtics who are taking on the LA Lakers in game seven of the NBA finals tonight. There's lots to come on the show this year judging from the emotion-wrought trailer, including the anticipated romance between Kevin and Emmanuelle Chriqui's characters. Emmanuelle stuck with the girls, including Perrey Reeves and Carla Gugino. Adrian and Kevin spent a few hours earlier in the day working on their new episodes, which we'll get to see starting June 27.

Anna Kendrick Sticks With Familiar Pre-Oscar Sunday!

Anna Kendrick joined the crowd at last night's Art of Elysium party at Palihouse Holloway in LA.

Anna Kendrick joined the crowd at last night's Art of Elysium party at Palihouse Holloway in LA. She kept warm in her white coat for the second night in a row as she takes in all the pre-Oscar mania. This time she was joined by a super pink Amy Smart and silky Nicky Hilton, as well as a more casually dressed Topher Grace. Anna, who is building "freak out" time into her weekend itinerary, was representing this year's Academy Award nominees as the rest were scattered throughout the city at all the different soirees. In a few short days we'll see if the red carpet newcomer joins the ranks of iconic Oscar gowns or even takes home a win against all the predictions. Who do you think will become the proud owners of little gold men? Enter our Oscar ballot contest now!

Which Ocean's 13 Man is the Most Dashing?

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie Ocean's 11.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie Ocean's 11. One of the things I liked most about it was Brad & George's characters' sharp style. In Hollywood the women are no doubt the peacocks and get most of the fashion attention; I am guilty of this too. But Ocean's 11 brought crisp suiting and well-manicured men back to the big screen and boy was it fun man candy. Here is the cast of Ocean's 13 rearing to go at Cannes and what a lineup of dashing men, sans Ellen Barkin of course. If you look at the choices below I think you can see which fellow gets my vote (drool), who gets yours?!
