15 Companies That Could Collapse in 2009

15 Companies That Could Meet Their Demise in 2009

Big named businesses began declaring bankruptcy in 2008, and we'd be foolishly optimistic to think the buck stopped in the new year. While it may not make sense to pay any attention to predictions, it's always good to stay in tune with what's happening in our economy and the types of companies on this list say a lot about the bigger picture. Using data from sources such as Moody's Investors Service, US News compiled a list of 15 companies it believes will look much different by the end of 2009. Would you be sad to see any of them go?

  1. Rite Aid
  2. Claire's Stores
  3. Chrysler
  4. Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group
  5. Realogy Corp.
  6. Station Casinos
  7. Loehmann's Capital Corp.
  8. Sbarro
  9. Six Flags
  10. Blockbuster
  11. Krispy Kreme
  12. Landry's Restaurants
  13. Sirius Satellite Radio
  14. Trump Entertainment Resorts Holdings
  15. BearingPoint

Here's Claire's response to the US News article: "In regard to your recent article, we view your comments about Claire's Stores as highly speculative and irresponsible. Had we had an opportunity to comment prior to publication we would have noted that Claire's has an extremely flexible capital structure with no near term debt maturities and no financial covenants. Furthermore, as of the Company's last report it had $194 million of cash. While the retail business has been difficult lately, Claire's is a value provider well suited for today's times and is comfortable with its financial condition."

I doubt Rite Aid would be going anywhere without Duane Reade going first. They actually think a 10 cent discount is something. Hell, CVS should also go kick rocks before Rite Aid.

I love Clair's...I get all my super cheap earrings from them. I would also miss Krispy Kreme, those donuts are like heaven.

It would be sad to see any of these places go.... sbarro, claires=childhood memories.. if six flags were to go that would be bad for many cities, including mine. Imagine the amusement park abandoned.. it would turn into a nightmare! Krispy Kreme can't go!! I may not have been there in a looong time, but its a classic!! you shouldn't say you don't care if any of these places go.. bc once they do they leave behind empty locations that will become rundown and unused... with the economy as it is..

Get rid of them! Most of them just sell expensive things that people don't need. Though, my sweetie will be sad to see Sbarro go. Nothing like a really cheap plate of pretty bad spaghetti.

I just re-read the list and noticed Loehmann's. That would be quite a loss. I like their website, they had/have some great deals. I still love my Nicole Miller s/s pink sweater jacket (only $30 was $125.) Same goes for the pieces by Free People.

Sbarro  . The few times I go to the mall (I mainly shop online) I always stop at Sbarro for a meal; my favorite is the zitti with melted cheese and tomoato sauce (with a hint of basil). Yum. I would miss the place. I would sort of miss Rite-Aid; it is only a minute from my house. Though we have a Walgreens and two CVS stores, so I'm not upset. Still sad to see them go; it represents the times.

The land Six Flags is sitting on is probably worth a lot more than the stuff that sits on it, I'd understand if they decided to sell it off. Kind of a bummer about Rite Aid, but we're being overloaded by CVS stores at the moment. Seriously. I live by 6 of them.

I don't even think we have Sbarro's anymore.I would be sad if Blockbuster,Claires, and Krispy Kreme and Rite Aid go under.I haven't been to these places in years but I like them.

Sbarros?! I suppose I'm not surprised there...I've only ever seen it at the mall, but their food is fantastic! And you get so much for what you pay. Blockbuster's doesn't surprise me at all. Krispy Kreme sort of does.

Krispy Kreme. They are the only doughnut that I really like.

Hmm, I love the cheap accessories at Claire's, but I'd be willing to pay a little more if it would help keep them in business! And I would be absolutely devastated if SiriusXM went under. :( C'mon, they only have $175 million in debt, can't they get a bailout like everyone else is? Blockbuster is almost archaic in this day and age - why spend $5 to rent a movie no matter how long I can keep it, when I can either get it at Redbox for $1/day (as long as we ever keep our redbox movies,) or get it from Netflix and keep it for as long as I want? I'd be sad to see Six Flags go, but I haven't been in years, so it's not like I'd be terribly surprised to see it happen. I'll just miss knowing that there are people out there making bigger and badder roller coasters all the time.

well I work part-time at Rite Aid so I'm pretty sure that I would be the most sad about Rite Aid closing.

Rite Aid has been expanding here in New England lately but they've probably expanded too fast. I do remember eating their ice cream when I was growing up though and I'd miss it.Blockbuster stores have been closing left and right here too. I will miss their physical stores and I was a Total Access customer for a while, but now I've switched to Netflix.
