Career Expert Advises: You Don't Always Have to Be On

Finding the right work-life balance is a lifelong task. The Times Online asked a panel of experts for their tips on keeping the scale in the right zone and their suggestions are inspiring. Sylvia Ann Hewlett, who leads the Center for Work-Life Policy in New York and has written two career-minded books, including Off-Ramps and On-Ramps: Keeping Talented Women on the Road to Success, offered some particularly sound advice. She says:

It's a myth that successful professionals always need to be "on". Bill Gates takes "think" weeks, without friends, family or distraction. Time to think, without interruption, leaves you refreshed and renewed, with great strategic ideas.
