Affordable Valentine's Celebrations

I'm Asking: What's an Affordable Way to Spend Valentine's?

The big V-day is coming up, and it's an occasion that can become quite spendy if you're not too careful with your money. The chocolates, nice dinner out, exchange of presents, or even a romantic trip can all add up.

In fact, because we're slowly rebounding back from the recession, consumer spending has come back again. The National Retail Federation predicts that this year, the average American will shell out $116 on Valentine's festivities. This is up 11 percent from last year. Greeting cards will again be the most common gift, but jewelry is apparently going to be a popular option as well, the NRF says.

There are plenty of ways to scrimp and save without ruining the romantic mood, so I'm asking, how are you planning on saving this Valentine's Day?

Betty Wayne look at that link I posted, they're still doing it! I think they've been doing it for like 5 years now. I've been 3 times-twice with friends, once with my boyfriend. And we're going again this year. It is my favorite way to spend Valentine's Day!

Oh my God, Betty Wayne, I would DIE to go to that. I love White Castle, but we don't have them here. :( I confess, I bought a semi-splurgy gift. The bf has an affinity for wearing a suit vest when he dresses up, and I feel it needs a pocket watch to complete the look. So I bought him one that says "you and no other" in French on the inside cover.

KeLynns the White Castle near me had a candle light Valentine's special a few years back. They even had waiters. I asked my boyfriend at the time to take me and he wouldn't do it...

If you are in a long term relationship and don't feel the need to wow one another with lavish gifts, I recommend making a sweet, inexpensive Valentine's Day tradition that reinforces your love for one another and things you like doing together without having to wrap anything up. I highly recommend the tradition of homemade pizza, a bottle of wine and movie you've been dying to watch.

Go to a park (if it's not too cold). Like Testadura said, make dinner together don't go to a restaurant. I'm planning on making cupcakes for my Valentine. Write each other love letters. Kiss a little more. Go to a museum if you have a season pass. Go to a wine bar or bar instead of a restaurant, and only get drinks and snacks.

Last year my boyfriend and I declared Valentine's Day "Naked Day In" day. Since it fell on the weekend, we both took the day off and didn't leave the apt. We made dinner from scratch and spent the whole day focused on each other. Gotta say it beats dinner at a restaurant and a movie. We're planning the same thing this year :)
