Air Travel Pet Peeves

What Are Your Travel Pet Peeves?

As a frequent flier, I always have my liquids stored in a quart-size bag, laptop ready for inspection, and cell phone turned off before departure. I can see how occasional or first-time fliers could be oblivious to certain air travel protocol, but that doesn't excuse a lack of common courtesy. For instance, I see red and hear the sounds of fingernails running down a chalkboard when passengers push and weave through the overcrowded aisle to exit the plane. In my experience, travel etiquette says to exit the plane row by row. And if you're on the verge of missing a connection flight, you should notify a flight attendant beforehand, so she may help you get a jump before the rush. So, from the metal-ridden man holding up the security line to the crying kid in first class, I want to know what really ticks you off during your travels.

I was flying this weekend and due to the extreme weather there was a delay. My friend who was traveling with me, totally lost it and would not be satisfied no matter what the lady at the counter told her. She wanted to cancel the flight and book with another airline and blamed the delay on the airline. I tried to console her and said she would still make the connecting flight but she wouldn't hear it. It was only a 30 minute delay. I totally agree with Roaring Silence. You should be happy that air travel is even possible and affordable.

JAD0314, I totally agree with you on the not standing in the way before your zone is called . . . another huge pet peeve of mine!

Flying is public transportation. Yes, you pay more than you would to get on a city bus, but it is still public transportation. There are going to be loud kids, smelly people, rude people, and delays. Expect it and get over it. Pack your headphones and something to read and zone out. Seriously. It's not worth getting so upset about, and if you really can't tolerate the loud kids, smelly people, rude people, and delays then don't fly on a public airplane.

The thing that is so much worse than holdups when traveling is people who complain about them. It happens all the time, why are you so surprised? To quote Louis CK: "A DELAY of 20 minutes? Oh really? What happened next? Did you fly through the air, incredibly…like a bird? Did you partake in the miracle of human flight? You non-contributing zero. You’re flying! It’s amazing! Everyone on every flight should be going OH MY GOD! You’re sitting…in a chair…in the sky!” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r1CZTLk-Gk But anyway! One time I was flying and the crew told us that there had been an error in the number of pretzels/peanuts they had and there weren't enough for everyone, so they weren't going to give them out at all, rather than giving them to half the passengers. And one lady close to me totally lost it and flipped out. I thought maybe she had diabetes or something and just HAD to eat, so I offered her an apple and a granola bar or whatever I had on me, but she said she wasn't hungry, but she thought it was unbelievable that she paid so much for her flight and couldn't even get a snack. Wow. A packet of peanuts, really? I feel very sorry for people who work at airports and such and have to put up with rude customers and their overinflated sense of entitlement.

Rude or noncomplient passengers, people that don't LISTEN to the instructions in the security line, people that bring their smelly food on the plane (a chilli dog, seriously), too much perfume, people that take forever and a day to put up or take down their luggage from the bins...I could go on and on. It's like people are just oblivious, just completely inconsiderate.
