College Calling For Donations

Does Your Alma Mater Call You For Donations?

I've been getting weekly calls from my Alma Mater to see if I have any interest in donating. I do have interest, and I would love to donate since I really treasure my undergrad experience, but constantly calling me is not going to encourage me to do so!

I prefer to do it on my own time, and to make my donations online rather than over the phone. In fact, I'd much rather they email me instead, and they unfortunately keep calling me while I'm at work. I've asked them to take me off their calling list, but it doesn't seem to have worked. Do you guys experience this too — do you keep getting phone calls from your Alma Mater about donating?

Yes! But it stopped when I moved overseas. They do have my phone number, but I guess long distance calls are expensive or they couldn't figure out my country/area code (which I unhelpfully did not provide for them, haha). Yeah, phone calls are really annoying. They might have more luck with emails. Particularly if they mention in an email that it's okay to give even a small amount and that it helps the school's ranking. I did not know that stuff. The ranking thing especially would make me more interested in giving. Because there's kind of something in it for me if my alma mater looks good.

No! Thank goodness. Then again, I just went to a community college. They are probably smarter than that, lol.

They call constantly. Fortunately, they only have my mom's home line. Any time she actually answers the phon and gives it to me, I tell them when I finish paying my student loans, I'll be glad to donate. I graduated less than 4 years ago, started getting calls at 2 years. Ridiculous.

I'm a recent grad and they have wasted no time contacting me! I do donate ($20 a year, for the scholarship fund) because I had a good experience and because the percentage of alumni who donate is a factor in the school's ranking. Also, I went to a very small college so I knew all the kids that had the campus jobs making the calls and it's really not a great job! I'll have a chat with the student for a while, see if we had any common professors, and once I ordered a couple of pizzas for them!

Whenever I have a missed call from a 617 number, I know it was them. They don't leave messages. And when they call, they ask all sorts of questions, feigning interest. And then they get around to asking me. I feel like a jerk saying no, but I do "pledge" to donate. And eventually every year I do, at pretty much a minimum amount. I tell myself that, some day, when I'm a millionaire like a lot of alums, then maybe I'll donate more :P

I do and I hate it. I just say I'm currently unemployed and don't have extra to donate. That keeps them at bay for a while.

The stupidest thing I ever did was give my alma mater my phone number. I refuse to answer their calls because I hate being pressured by anyone, at any time, to give money to any cause. (I have my favorite charities and prefer to donate on my own time.) What I should do is answer once and tell the representative at the end to take me off their calling lists. And then move and give them a phony address ;) !
