Companies With the Worst Customer Service

5 Companies With Bad Customer Service, 5 With Good

If you've ever been so frustrated with a customer service rep that you hung up the phone in anger, you're not alone. According to a Consumer Reports survey, about two-thirds of consumers say that they've walked out of a store or ended a phone call before the issue was resolved because they were so frustrated with the customer service. Some of the top gripes include not being able to get a real person on the phone, dealing with a bad mannered sales rep, too many phone steps required, and having to wait on the phone for a long time. July's issue of the consumer magazine listed some of the companies and rated them as having the worst customer service:

  • Walmart
  • AT&T
  • US Airways
  • Dell
  • Charter

And some of the companies with the best customer service include:

  • Trader Joe's
  • US Cellular
  • Southwest
  • Apple
  • DirecTV

We've all had our share of painful experiences with these reps — what was your worst customer service experience?

I don't particularly like the customer service at United Healthcare. I'm glad that I don't have to call them often for any billing issues.

I second the horrible service from Apple. This is not just based on my interactions with them but also friends' interactions with them at several locations. I'm exclusively PC now.

My mom had a horrible experience with DirectTV. In the beginning it was peaches and cream, service was excellent and there was nothing to complain about. Then there was some mysterious charges on the bill and there was no way it came from us. I think back then you had to connect to a phone line to order pay per view channels and we hadn't even bother to insert a phone cable to order pay per view. Long story short, they was harassing my mom over the unpaid charges and threaten to destroy her credit rating. Mom dropped. In the end, they realized that they was in the wrong and is aggressively trying to woo her back. Recently it has stopped but that experience has left a bad taste in my mouth in regards to that company.

@KatyPlaysForte, I wouldn't judge an entire company's customer service on one bad experience. Especially a company so large. Apple cannot control outbursts from random employees. That could have been a freak experience. Horrible, none the less!

The worst was by far Apple. I can't believe that they made the "best" list. I called to ask if there was some sort of a recall because my laptop was defective, and I was literally screamed at. It was shocking and appalling to say the least.

Thankfully I haven't ever had to call customer service for anything. But I used to be a customer service rep and I got yelled at CONSTANTLY for things I did not do and could not do anything about. So I'd hope I'd be patient with whoever it was. And ask for a manager, I wasn't allowed to offer a manager's help even if I knew they could do something that I could not.

US Airways is sooooo bad. I am so happy to be flying Southwest a bunch more these days.
