Cost of Stamps Going Up to 44 Cents

Money Tip: Pay 42 Cents Forever With Forever Stamps

How many times have you heard the phrase, "Nothing lasts forever"? Probably more times than the US Postal Service has raised the price of stamps in your lifetime, and that's saying a lot. It feels like the cost of stamps changes as frequently as the weather, and this week the postal service announced another increase. As of May 11, the cost of mailing those birthday cards, thank-you notes, and rent checks will be 44 cents.

The two-cent increase probably isn't a huge blow; how often do you put something in the mail anyway, right? Here's the real question to ask: why pay more for something when you don't have to? If you're passing the post office this week or next, pop in and pick up some extra Forever stamps. You'll pay the current rate of 42 cents, and they will be good, well, forever.

Don't buy too many of these. They're a good idea to save you a bit if you just buy a modest supply right before the rate hike, but if you do the math, and if postal increase trends stay consistent with history, they are actually a BAD investment if you buy too many of them. Postage rates have been getting LOWER when adjusting for inflation. http://www.slate.com/id/2166475 Honestly, savvysugar, I'm surprised you didn't do a little more research on this one.

I'm proud to say I actually did this today, even before I read this article. How unusually "savvy" of me.

I just finished up a book of "Forever" stamps that I bought three years ago! It's the only stamp that they say they will never place a denomination on, so it's First-Class mail no matter what the current vs paid First-Class price was when you bought them.

We have some Forever stamps from whenever the last time they had them at the Post Office. Can we still use those Forever Stamps? Or are they not good anymore? If I can't use them anymore, I'll be pretty upset that I have "Forever Stamps" that don't last forever. This is probably why we pay most of our bills online...it just makes things a lot simpler.

I can still remember when they were 25 cents. Geez, makes me feel old!

seriously - the Forever stamps will work? if that's the case then i'll just get more of them since it's better to pay less when you can right? it's just sooo annoying to have to continuously go and buy 1 cent and 2 cents stamps each time they increase the cost.
