Crying at Work 2008-02-08 15:35:40

Have You Ever Cried at Work?

I've done it (once). Hillary Clinton has done it (more than once). And now I want to know if you've ever shed tears in your professional setting. Tears can be brought on for a variety of reasons — people cry when they're frustrated, angry, overwhelmed, or in reaction to something said to them. Has there ever been anything or anyone that's caused you to reach for the tissues on your desk?

twice: the first time was in private, and i was bleeding internally and didn't know it (and thus in loads of inexplicable pain). the second time was in my boss/mentor's office, when she told me she was being laid off.

Oh my god...I did this for the first time yesterday! I had no idea it could even happen, but I have a new job, and it was my first week and my boss is INSANE! I have NEVER even come close to crying at work before, no matter what happens...I have the feeling that won't be the last time I cry at work. Oh well, at least I've lasted a week, the last person in my position only lasted a week...gaaaah I'm dreading work tomorrow.

I tend to cry when I get angry. I get angry, tear up, then get angrier that I'm tearing up because I don't want to appear weak, so more tears...It's a cycle. It sucks.

Yeah, I've cried. The military is pretty tough, sometimes. And Basic Training right out of High School makes it even more so. I know a lot of people who cried through that.

I have cried a few times but usually over something outside of work. I cried once because of my boss and being completely over stressed and I just snapped. The last time I cried was 2 weeks ago because I hurt myself and was waiting for the ambulance to get there.

I cried, but it wasn't work related.

Oh, I hate crying in public! Once, when I was in my early 20's. My team leader, who was a "best work friend" prior to being the team leader, was an older very hormonal lady. She would always tell me, "You know how I get when I don't take my meds. Remind me to get them refilled." Well, it took nothing to set her off & one morning, after casually answering her first question (It was a yes or no one.), she just went off on me with one of her crazy demented rants. (People in our neighboring department nick-named her Jekyll & Hyde.) It was after months of the same treatment & daily craziness & I just could not take it anymore. I was so young & naive. I also cried when I got the phone call to get to thy hospital right away, to be with my grandmother as she was dying. It was horrible & all I could think of was that I had spent too much time in that place (You know how it is when you go to a salary job.), instead of spending more of it with her. In fact, the reason I quit work was because I was fighting the urge to cry all day at work. A year's worth of clomid (fertility drug) & big job stress will do that to you! The two just don't mix well. I'm so thankful to be blessed with the opportunity to stay home while I'm trying to get pregnant.

I'm not the crying kind at all but assisting Harvey Weinstein at Miramax Films would bring a rock to tears. Check out Down and Dirty Pictures by Pete Biskind (a former assistant to the beast) if you want a glimpse, this guy makes Miranda Priestly look like a saint.

Once - it was a pretty bad day. And I locked myself in the bathroom, and no one in the office knows about it. Sometimes you can't help it, but at least don't impose that on the people who work with you! (my coworkers had a time when they would just burst in tears or scream at work)

I've cried once at work, but only because I found out that a relative had died...I think that's pretty understandable...

I'm so glad I'm not the only one that cries more than I should at work. :X I also remember that I cried really hard when I heard I was getting laid off. My boss had promised me a promotion, it was Christmastime and I'd just bought a new car.

Yeah, but it had nothing to do with work... or my boyfriend!

i have cried at work but never in front of anyone that it would be bad to see. when my raise was a joke - i cried - but in the bathroom, and when i got screamed at for no reason, i cried in my boyfriend's office - and then got the chick who yelled fired - so i was laughing in the end.

Yes, I've cried a few times. I work at a Hotel and people think they can be so rude! I was having a rough day and had several people bitch at me about stupid things. Well this one couple somehow locked themselves out of their room while the dead bolt was on. I had to call my boss and he was really pissed about having to come down to help me open the door. He YELLED at me right in front of the customers who already thought I was an idiot. I was so embarrassed and pissed off. I just walked away to try to get a grip but I just lost it. My boss kinda felt bad but whatever, he's an ass. I also cried a lot when me and my ex-boyfriend broke up. I was a nervous wreck for probably a good two months. I would see/read something and would just start bawling. Thankfully, I'm usually by myself unless a customer comes. I've had to check a couple people in with red puffy eyes. :-S I hate feeling upset at work and almost feeling trapped because you can't leave.

Once in the bathroom. Once in my cubicle, but only let two trusted co-workers see me. Once last week in my office after hearing that an old coworker is very, very ill.

i don't think i have ever cried at work but i did cry in a job interview - i had lost my sister a few months before and when the interviewer asked me why i had left college before completing my course i had to tell him the reason, and i began to cry to my absolute horror!! obviously i didnt get the job but a few years later i applied for the same company and was interviewed by the MD again. not only did i get the job, it was a better job than i originally applied for and i stayed there for 3 and a half years and was told i was an asset to the company. now that was weird, but hey, it was worth it in the end!

I only cried once when I was on the verge of leaving. But that job almost made me cry multiple times, but I would (literally) shake it off in the back room to keep my composure.
