Who doesn't love a little sparkle? This tutorial will show you how to permanently glitter-ize the drab coffee mugs you have at home with just a few simple, easy steps. The key to this project is using the right decoupage formula that, when cured, will make the glitter finish completely dishwasher safe. Pair these mugs with some of your favorite tea bags, chocolates, or coffee beans, and you have yourself an inexpensive, personalized gift that your friends are guaranteed to love.

Here's what you'll need:

  • Mugs
  • Glitter
  • Martha Stewart's Decoupage Formula in Gloss Finish
  • Tape
  • Paintbrush

Step 1

Use the tape to clearly define a border for where you would like the glitter to end on the mug. Ensure that the tape is properly adhered to the mug to avoid the glue from seeping underneath the tape.

Step 2

Use the paintbrush to paint a light, even coating of decoupage, starting from the bottom of the mug to the tapeline.

Step 3

Liberally sprinkle the glitter onto the mug until fully coated. Remove the tape.

Step 4

Flip the mug upside down and allow the mug to air dry for at least 4 to 5 hours.

Step 5

Use a dry paintbrush to remove loose glitter. Apply 1 additional coating of decoupage over the glittered surface. Allow the glue to dry for a week, and the glitter will be fully set. To ensure a permanent result, allow the decoupage to cure for a full 28 days.
