You can also use a good unscented hand made soap if you want to go really chemical free. The soap I make, the only chemical is the lye... that's it. It also has goat milk in it for added cleaning power.

Hi Emily! Dr. Bronner's soap averages between $2-$4 per bar. The detergent recipe I use requires 1/3 of a bar per batch (each batch makes close to 2 gallons of liquid detergent), so each bar makes 3 huge batches of detergent!!! It's quite amazing :) It is probably cheapest online, but sometimes grocery stores will have it on sale too. The chain grocery stores in my area even sell it, it's not difficult to find.

Hi @AmyGee  Great suggestion! Is Dr. Bronner's soap more expensive?

Great idea!  Next time I run out of laundry detergent I'll refer to this.

I just want to point out that the Fels-Naptha soap is full of disgusting ingredients. Sodium tallowate is rendered beef fat and glycerin is most often made from animal fats as well. Tallow acid is made from animal fats too. The bar soap also has artificial colors. I hardly think these should be ingredients in an eco-friendly product. The label on the bar of soap has a warning "Eye and skin irritant". Ummm... I would never wash my clothes with something toxic, even if it was homemade.   I make my own laundry detergent with a similar recipe, but use Dr. Bronner's castile bar soap (biodegradable, organic, fair trade, etc) instead. It is made from clean ingredients and Dr. Bronner's is a good company, unlike The Dial Corporation (which manufactures Fels-Naptha soap).
