Did Your City's Fireworks Show Go On?

Did Your City's Fireworks Show Go On?

I have fond memories of sitting on ocean jetties as a Fourth of July celebrating kid and watching the fireworks displays of three different cities, within minutes of each other. This was the tradition every Fourth, and it seems this year many cities' holiday traditions were interrupted due to the weak economy.

Given the expense it's clear why some would consider skipping the festivities: The average fireworks display costs $10,000 for 15 minutes of show, while bigger shows in larger cities may cost around $100,000.

It's illegal in my town. They used to only have the city-sponsored one, but now not even that goes on. This guy at my church told me the police supposedly sent out helicopters to pinpoint where exactly fireworks were coming from if there were any set off. I can see their point, though. It seems half the state is on fire right now.

You know, my neighborhood leaves the streelights on in sections of the neighborhood that don't even have sidewalks or houses yet... turning them off, or at least for part of the night, would be a great way to save us homeowners some $$!!

I live in NYC so you know that you can't NOT have the fireworks. it's televised everywhere - and i have to say that they did a great job this year - going all out. there were some really cool displays - even in the rain (although thankfully i didn't get wet)

Yup, the firework show in my small city started at 9:30 and ended 15 minutes later. But after every Fourth of July, at about 12 or 1 in the morning, they turn off the streetlamps to save energy & money I guess.

I loved the Chicago fireworks - every year it gets better. Thursday on the 3rd - I got to see them with over 2 million of my closet neighbors () and the rest of the weekend (yes they last for several days)I just walked to the lakefront and watched them.

Sarasota and Venice (Southwest Florida) still had fireworks... and both shows were pretty long. Sertoma, a service club, raises money for the Venice fireworks through some really great community events... so the people pay for them rather than the city.

Our city had the fireworks on the day before because there was a chance of rain on the 4th.

I can't think of any area locally that cancelled them. The city where I work said they didn't have the money, but enough donations came in that they were still able to go on.

i live in chicago and the fireworks are always incredible (save the 1.2 million people with you to see them!)

I don't live in the US but if my town cancelled the fireworks because of the crisis it would be awful. There are many superflous expenses that can be cut in order that the children might be able to see the fireworks, as I did, even if they are not as brillian as in past years.

I think the fireworks show in my town got cancelled b/c a band was playing in the usual fireworks venue. I still saw a few works scattered through the city though.

The Boston fireworks were amazing as usual. And!! My friends got engaged! He proposed to her just as the fireworks got underway. And just by chance, a friend's friend who was a photographer was there, and caught it all on film! I was so excited. It was awesome!

There were firework shows around Tampa, but I'm not sure who paid for them all.

The city show seemed shorter this year, but other shows I could see from along a Southern California hillside definitely went longer and seemed bigger - my 4-year old nephew actually started to complain that it was enough already!
