Did Your Employer Give You a Personality Test?

For some employers, a resume and interview aren’t enough. They want to know what you might not be telling them — or might not even know — about yourself. Those employers turn to personality tests to help with the hiring process.

We’re not talking Myers-Briggs, though; these tests ask you to rank how strongly you agree with certain statements, describe how you’d respond in seemingly non-work-related situations, and even complete math problems and patterns. The end result is that employers (theoretically) get a breakdown of your strengths and weaknesses, and even what positions you’re best suited for.

I’ve both administered and taken these tests, and although they can be pretty painful to get through, they sometimes produce interesting insight into people’s personalities. Have you ever encountered one?

my current one didn't but i've taken one in the past. my previous job decided that it would be helpful for them to hire ppl better suited for various departments if they knew what traits some of the best performing employees had. i was asked to be profiled for my department, so i had to fill out this long test. it was interesting, and i think that they learned the exact opposite of what they were expecting when looking for ppl to fit my job description. i don't know if it's just because of the type of person that i am that i'm not exactly fitting the mold of what i do - but i love it and i like to think that i'm pretty good at it too.

I probably wouldn't work for a company that used personality testing to get hired. Have taken them afterwards as part of a work group, interesting results.

Yes I have. But hate them. After taking it I learned that I was not at match for the company and did not get the job due to my results.

I had to take one when I applied for a job at a small retail chain many years ago. I thought it was the strangest thing.

I had to take one on an interview once, but the decided I didn't want that job because it was way too corporate. The job I have now, and love, did not require one. Yay!

Sort of. We all had to do this seminar where we took a personality test and were grouped into "colors" based on the results. Then we had a big seminar on how to interact with the other "colors" so we could be more effective communicators. I thought it was fairly stupid, but apparently HR thought it was somehow a good idea.

Yes, I've taken one for all of the jobs I ever had.
