Do Opposites Attract When It Comes to Spending Habits?

This question comes from reader Lauren in our How Do You Save? group.

I read a very interesting article on Get Rich Slowly today. The article is about a study where they found people are attracted to mates who have opposite ideas toward saving and spending money, so penny pinchers are attracted to spenders and vice versa.

I have thought of several couples, myself included and pretty much this statement holds true. I have been married for eight months and my husband is much more thrifty than myself since we have been married, I have definitely become less of a spender and realize the value of saving. He spends more than he used to but still saves. So I feel that although we are opposites, we have learned from each other.

I was just wondering, are you and your significant other also the opposite with regard to money?

Count us the same...we both save quite a bit but when we spend, we have different priorities.

We're on the same page when it comes to spending/saving, but we have differences in what we feel we should spend money on sometimes. Overall, we're pretty much in sync, though.

I'm like the ladies above. We are very similar in our spending/saving habits.

I'm with skigurl -- hubs and and I very similar views on saving and spending. We've also been very open in talking about money with each other from the get-go in our relationship. I'm really glad I knew in advance what kind of financial situation awaited me before we got married.

we are very much in sync...it's awesome he does periodically spend money on stuff that boggles my mind but then again, i'm sure he thinks the amount of money i spend on clothes sometimes is ridiculous too but that's just another part of our "similarity"...overall we have the spend attitudes toward spending and saving
