Do You Cover the Receipt When You're Tallying the Total?

Do You Cover the Receipt When You're Tallying the Total?

Something I've noticed when dining out with particular friends and was a constant when I was dating, is the tendency for many people to cautiously guard the receipt when filling out the tip.

I always wondered if dates treating me to dinner were trying to cover up the total or the tip, but with friends signing their separate bills I can only conclude they're shy about that tip line. Some people are definitely more private than others when settling the bill — are you one of them?

I don't do it intentionally, but I do cover the receipt (usually from my husband, even when he knows almost exactly what the total is, as it's our usual at one of our usual places -- he pays if we go on his turn to take care of dinner, and I pay on mine -- and he knows what my usual tip is there). I just have a privacy thing that also manifests itself that way, I guess...

I think I do it without noticing - I'm usually ~20%, so it's not like I have anything to hide... I just find it gauche to look at what someone else tips.

I cover it when I'm treating to hide the total, not the tip. I'm a good tipper so I don't usually care if they know how much the tip is, but if it's my treat, it's my treat and I wouldn't be getting it if I couldn't afford it, and I don't want my bf/friend/whoever to worry about how much I spent/didn't spend.

i think that sometimes i do it without thinking and others it's something i make a point to do. it depends on the company that i'm in and what the cost of the meal is. honestly,i think that we are all smart enough to know what our food costs - so it's usually not a surprise when you're out to eat and you pay the tab- but there are times when the bill is really large - and you don't want people to see that you're paying x amount of dollars and that you're tipping x amount as well.

i never cover because im a generous tipper. and i currently live in south-west Virginia, so i know the severs don't see "good" tips that often.o p.s. if you don't have enough money to leave a decent tip, then don't go out to dinner...

I never purposely cover the receipt because I almost always calculate 20% tip and for poor service 15

I haven't really noticed anyone that I've dine with do this. And when I pay for it, I usually ask everyone how much I should tip.

I don't hide it. I used to be a bartender and/or waitress, so I tend to tip a bit higher than most, especially if we have a large party and the service has been good. If we're splitting the bill and I tell people what their portion is, and everyone ponies up, I usually throw in a few bucks more. I figure those few bucks mean more to them than to me. It sure did to me when I was in that situation.

The reason I cover it is because i'm taking the time to add. I have to take a bit longer to make sure i got the numbers right. :(

I usually cover it up b/c people are nosy. But I am a stickler for tipping - always 15%.

Usually my friends will actually ask around the table "How much should we tip?" so it really becomes a non-issue.

I've worked in restaurants so I tip at least 20%, and I don't mind if other people see it. Sometimes I hope they do so they'll feel compelled to leave a bit more themselves.

I definitely do not do it on purpose if at all. Bad tipping is a huge pet peeve of mine. My mom used to be horrible and one time I was like you can not just leave that. I have never worked as wait staff but I have enough friends who have and I have heard the horror stories.

I cover it up because I tip well unless the service is horrendous (my husband is a waiter, and I have been one, and it's a tough job!) -- I don't go out to eat if I can't afford to tip well. However, most of my friends don't tip well, and I don't want to make them feel weird/bad by flashing around the tip I'm leaving. Plus, sometimes I tip more to compensate for their bad tips.

I try to be sneaky about covering up. I just move it so that people can't see it as well, but they can still see it if they absolutely feel the need. :) I always tip 20% or more (unless it was a really bad waiter) and I don't want my friends to comment on it.

I only do it when I'm dining out with my Mom. She always tries to look at my receipt to see how much tip I gave and usually she tells me it's not enough. :oy: She always gives BIG tips and she expects me to do the same thing. But, unfortunately I don't make as much money as she does. :oy:
