Do You Think Your Guy Understands What You Do?

Short of handing your guy a detailed job description of your job, it can be difficult to convey what exactly it is you do day in and day out. Of course it's easier to grasp some jobs than others because they're more straightforward in nature, and some seem so obscure that it would probably be easiest to have a camera follow you around all day to make what you do more obvious.

Couples who work in similar industries can be at an advantage because it's easier to sympathize when you understand exactly what's going on without much explanation. When you're dishing about your day, does your guy understand? Or is he a handsome listener who you love but doesn't really get what you do for a living?

My boyfriend understands my job and what it entails, it's not hard to grasp, but I don't think he really understands how hard a day can be at my job. I work at a library so the work is not physically exhausting but is mentally draining. When I come home and am tired, I don't think he really gets that, he seems to think that unless you are doing manual labor all day that you can't be tired and worn out.

He understands what I do. Ass't to the CEO; it's pretty straightforward! :)

My main job description is pretty easy to get BUT no one outside of my DEPARTMENT (so 7 people know what I do for a living)understand what my other titles/jobs are!!!

I think we both pretty much get what each other do. Sometimes it takes a little more explaining about some situation for him to get it, but overall I think he does. He just will never concede that my job is more stressful than his.

I'm a claims adjuster and my bf knows what I do, but I agree with (Lovely_1) He does not understand how stress ful my job is.. I handle Workers Comp claims.. and he thinks I sit on my ass and use the computer all day and make a few phone calls... not even close! My job is hectic and stress full.....

NOBODY who's not in my line of work can understand what it is I do. But hubby can understand a little.

Nobody gets what I do for a living without me having to give a detailed explanation. And I am too lazy for that. He gets the gist of it and understands better than most, but he doesn't know all the intricacies of my job.

He knows what I do, but doesn't really get all the details that it entails. And he doesn't understand why I have to travel so much - I'm gone all the time :(.

He understands what I do, but no matter how much he explains what he does ... I don't get it!

We just graduated from the same school with the same degree, so in most classes we follow, but in electives it can be iffy, since he took programming electives and I didn't. I'm sure now, since he's going on to a job that has to follow ITAR, he won't really tell me too much what's going on, and since I'm taking another major, he'll get the gist of it, but not follow exactly. They all think I'm crazy for taking a second major.

I work in book publishing, and he works in digital music. We kinda get what the other is talking about when using industry jargon.

Haha... No, I really don't think he has any idea what I do. I'm in sales for a news distribution service, so I'm pretty sure that anyone outside of the news or PR world just doesn't get it. But Ben REALLY doesn't get it. :)

We both work in aviation, he's a pilot and I'm in aerospace sales, so yes, it makes convo pretty easy. I know he's glad he has a gf who understands pilot lingo.

He knows *what* I do, but I doubt he knows *how* I do it. I'm a graphic designer, and he barely knows how to use a computer.

Our jobs are similar so it's easy to talk to each other about what we do. I even did his job at another place. We worked together at that point. Now he works at a business started by people we used to work with, doing a combination of both of our old jobs. Sometimes he emails me asking how to do things since they use the same computer system we had at our old job.

He understands it to a great extent, but I don't think he respects it as much as I'd like him to. The main reason - he couldn't do it, and he does something very different so at times he isn't sure why I do what I do. I don't want this to come off bitter though because it's not, it's just interesting.

He totally gets it. I've been with him for only like a couple months before I start this job (over 4 years ago) so he's been there through all the bosses, changes and everything. Also, since I work from home now, sometimes he asks what I'm doing and I explain a report or show him how it's useful. He's very impressed by my Excel skills haha

Yes, we are both architects working in the same office, although we deal with different areas.

My past jobs weren't straight forward like some people so I'd often have to tell him certain things I've done.

he hasn't the slightest idea...which is good. i don't want to sit at the dinner table talking about a bad structure fire i was in or a bloody patient i transported to the ER.

He sort of gets it, but I don't get what he does either. But he does know the people at work and the basics, and that's enough for me.

I think he has heard about it long enough that he gets it. When I tell him that the GC is being annoying and not following my design, he knows the GC isn't doing what I instructed them to do in my drawings. I have brought my drawings home before and he did ask all about what they mean and how to read them, so thats cool. I know less about his job. I know he audits, but when he goes into specifics with his crazy acronyms I can't follow.
