Don't Completely Alter a Wedding Dress

Savvy Community: Don't Buy a Dress That Has to Be Changed

Reader runningesq recently shared this smart wedding dress tip in the comments of our How Do You Save? group.

Alterations can get really pricey! Don't buy a dress to have it changed completely (new neckline, new back, etc.). Borrowing jewelry is a great way to save money and get in your "something borrowed". Etsy is a good place for inexpensive hair clips and pins. Check ebay and Craigslist for a veil.

If you are planning a wedding, or have planned one in the past, I want to know your secrets! Help future brides out by posting your tips and ideas in our How Do You Save? group. Your own precious tips could be featured on the site and help tons of other savvy brides plan their own dream weddings!

juicebox: I wasn't suggesting that you shouldn't have a dress altered! Almost all brides need to have thier dresses hemmed, taken in, let out, etc. My dress was hemmed several inches and taken in.My point was that you shouldn't buy a sleeveless dress with the intention of adding sleeves, or a dress with sleeves with the intention of making it sleeveless, or buy a dress with a corset back and have it convereted to buttons, etc.

I had to have my prom dress altered because I could not find any nice dresses in my size. The smallest size I found that I liked was a size 2. I'm around a size 0 or 1. Being a short & petite person, I always have trouble fitting into outfits properly. I have no doubt my future wedding dress might have to be altered too.
