Employers Offering Incentives For Employees to Live Greener

Employers Offering Green Benefits

Do you want to live greener but can't afford it? Some environmentally conscious employers have begun offering their employees lucrative benefits to help them live greener lives. These incentives include cash bonuses for trading in your vehicle for a more fuel efficient car, and even more cash if you spring for a hybrid — there are even cash rewards for car-pooling most days a week and some make energy-efficient light bulbs available at a discounted price. The monetary assistance that some companies give for buying a more environmentally friendly car is especially attractive because it allows employees to make a change that they may not have otherwise afforded.

Clif Bar & Co. located in Berkeley, CA is one company that has developed several green incentives for its 212 employees. They include giving points for green habits like finding alternatives to driving alone to work, and the points can be exchanged for cash or gift certificates to Whole Foods Market and free massages. The company even offers forgivable loans up to $5,000 for buying fuel-efficient cars — a certain amount is forgiven each year, and the $5,000 is completely forgiven if they stay with the company for five years.

Would incentives like these make a company more attractive to you as a job-seeker?

I also think employers should be educated. My boss could give a rats ass about the environment. I am the one who separates my own trash and recycles it on my own time and method (taking it home).

I think that's an extremely wise idea. More employers should start looking into ideas like that all over, not just in California. I also think that more and more employers should start educating their employees on environmental awareness.

Gas is insane and I am so sick of it. Where I work we now have to seperate our own garbage into compost, paper, refundable bottles/cans, metal, glass, and true garbage. It is saving the compnay $1 million a year.

I have a 02 protege5. Its like the 3 hatchback. They are great fun cars. I love it. Mine isn't the best in the snow, but thats part of the tire size that comes with it. I haven't spent too much on repairs. You have to get your timing belt changed around 60k, it costs a lot, but it has to be done.

How are Mazda's SkinnyMarie? I have been wanting to do a trade in for something new, but I have no idea where I want to go with it!

This would make me lean more one way than the other if I were searching for a job. I think it's great that companies are trying to do all they can to help the environment, even if it is for publicity and nothing else.

I wish this would happen to me. Even with my 30mpg mazda it hurts to fill it up.
