Google's Free 411 Service

Money Tip: Lay Off the 411

If you're someone who's constantly calling 411, you may have noticed that enough of those charges can jack up your bill. Simple solution? Call 1-800-GOOG-411 instead. It's a free service that works the same way as the original: Call from any phone, give the city and business type, and they'll connect you. Program the number in your phone so you don't have to remember the GOOG part.

I love Goog-411. I've used it quite a bit lately. It's quicker than looking it up on my iPhone.

Thank you for posting this! Geek Sugar blogged about it a while ago, but I didn't bother writing down the number then. Now I've programed it into my phone. I'd been meaning to look it up because my mom always asks me to 411 something, but my dad doesn't like footing that bill. Every time she mentions calling 411 I think - gosh, what was the number for that free google service? And now I can actually share it with her.

I never use 411, but I have used Google's SMS service. I've text messaged Google for store locations, directions, movie times, definitions, among other things. This was back when I had unlimited text messages on my phone plan. Now that I don't have the unlimited plan I should really use GOOG-411. I've had it programmed into my phone for weeks, but haven't needed Google's mobile assistance in months.

I'm a dork, too. I have a little mini phone book in the center console, but it makes a mess when I pull it out. Sprint 411 is like $3 or so each time

I am soo guilty of 411! My parents told me to layoff it, lol. Oh, I think I heard of something else that was similar to this a few years back. Thanks for the tip, Savvy! :)

OR even better- send a text to 'google' (466453) and put the name of the business, town, state (Al's Pizza, Springfield, MA) and in a FLASH it will send you back a text with the address and phone #. So handy!

Skinny!! Actually I didn't know that you could get directions through google but you can!! http://www.googletutor.com/2005/03/28/mobile-phone-googling/ It looks like you just put "from 112 thornall st. 08895 to 807 lee ave 09922". I'm not sure what the results will look like I guess you can also text google for weather and movietimes. I didn't know that either!

wow i never "411" anything. i dont really know what that is. but i do text message google! just send a text message like "pizza 12822" or "pizza chicago, il" or "outback chicago, il" to GOOGL and in 10 seconds you will get a text message from google giving you the names, addresses and phone numbers to the closest places. i like the text messages better than the phone calls because then i can save the text message in my phone and never forget. normal text message charges apply, but i have unlimited!

Good tip. My boss always 411 everything, so when she asked me to start doing it when she forget her phone, I put google in my phone so I can use that and not drive up my bill.
