Have You Been Eating More Soup to Save Money?

I am a soup fanatic (always asking about the soup of the day and loading my grocery cart with my favorite varieties), but for others, eating soup is more of a cost-saving choice than one of taste. On my recent trips to the grocery store, it has seemed like the soup aisle is more picked through than usual and there are more shoppers scoping out the selection. Have you been purchasing prepared soup more often as a cost saving measure?

I LOVE SOUP! Not so much from a can but I really like to make my own. Lately I've been on a hot n' sour soup kick. Tonight I'm thinking about making a thai green curry soup. Poor hubby is not a fan of soup - he will have to make his own dinner. :)

Nope, I'm not a big fan of soup. We do have some though. We try to buy foods that will last a while so when we don't really have anything we can just get that out.

A local quick stop station sells onions at a loss leader cost. I always have a stash of them around for making a huge pot of homemade French onion soup with homemade beef stock. SO much better than canned and super cheap. I freeze, in single serving bags, what I cannot use within two days. This way, I really don't have an excuse to dine out when I have some incredible soup at home!

Not soup, but I've been making a lot of curry! Curry paste and coconut milk are dirt cheap at my local Asian foods grocer.

I'm not a big fan of soup. Especially canned soup. The noodles are always mushy and it just tastes like salt to me.

Yes, but I make homemade soup. I make 12 cups at a time for my family and it lasts us 2-3 days.

The only kind of soup I like is Progresso brand Minestrone, even then it's like 2 dollars a can. So nope, lol.

A grocery store by my house is closing this week, so I've been stocking up on lots of non-perishables for about half price. I haven't bought much soup, though.

I'm not a big fan of canned soup, but I always have a few cans in the pantry just in case I don't have anything to eat. And no, I haven't been buying more canned soup than usual. In fact, I've been buying less, just because I don't really like canned soup.

WAAAAAAAAY too much sodium in canned soup and the low sodium stuff is gross. There are other ways to eat cheap...

I have been eating more soup lately, but not the canned kind. I make big batches of my own soup. It's very economical: you can use bones and very tough cuts of meat and lots of vegetables to make some decent soup for about 20 cents a serving.

I don't eat canned soup - there's way too much sodium for me to handle. And low-sodium soup just tastes incredibly bland. So, I just prefer to make my own. When it comes to cheap eating, I stick to pasta and mostly Mediterranean or Polish foods.

I know what you mean about most soups being better than Ramen...but damn do I love Ramen (although I tend to only fit into sweatpants after a nice big bowl of sodium with noodles!

yes i've been eating soup a lot more lately, partly due to money and partly due to the fact that i just don't have a craving for anything else. being a vegetarian, it's not like i would go the meat/fish/poultry route anyway, but soup has been a cheap thing for me to eat w/o going really un healthy with Ramen or things that are higher in sodium.

Kinda. My apartment has always been pretty stocked with soups so it's really nothing new. I do love them so, though :)

I think soup and some crackers is the perfect lunch. It's like $1.50, how can you beat that? Fills me up just fine! I always have soup, not just because it's cheap, just something I always buy, more because it's easy!

I can't even eat much canned soup, all that sodium equals lots of bloating later. I just avoid it.

No more than usual. I love soup too (canned soup, not homemade) and eat it 2-3 times a week for lunch. It's funny that people would buy it to save money because I've noticed in the last few months that soup prices have gone up and I get so annoyed paying $1.39 for a can of Campbells!

I've bought a couple of soup cans this past month but not to save money. I figured it would be easier to bring soup to work than it is to prepare a salad or sandwich. I hate the metallic taste the can tends to give the soup though.

I happen to really love tomato soup .... so my soup purchases haven't really changed. I have been eating more cereal though.
