Yes, I have been, and it wasn't as bad as I thought. I've found that the first interviews done over the phone are usually done by a recruiter, so the questions were very generic. I was probably over-prepared, but that's never a bad thing!

I've had a number of phone interviews, producing mixed feelings about them. Some have been excellent! But probably the worst one was when I was told that I'd be talking to a (fill in position title of someone who'd be a high-level boss). I was really excited and nervous, woke really early to prepare, etc. What happened? I was given a really long, cookie-cutter-type personality test, covering things that had no relationship to the position and administrated by a dumb-sounding HR rep (not that all are). How stupid is that?

Too many times. So far I found them pointless. I prefer face to face interviews although I can take a bath while doing a phone interview. I can fold my laundry, watch tv while it's close captioned, pick my nose whatever. But does it really help the employer I suspect not except in the cases where they need some one with a particularly nice voice and phone demeanor. Those phone interviews have always panned out. Well all except for the phone sex job. I turned that down.

Yes, and I don't like them. I tend to ramble when I'm nervous and the lack of visual interaction makes me worse.

i was living in Florida about a year and a half ago and i decided that i wanted to move back to NYC, so i had sent out my resume to a few places, and had a few phone interviews before they flew me up to meet in person. obviously they went pretty well given that i have the job. sometimes i just don't know how to set my expectations for a phone thing. you don't want to come off too casual, but you want to make sure that you're able to communicate well and that you put off a good impression since they can't see you - and we all know that appearance is part of how people get a job sometimes.

My interview to get into law school was over the phone. I was working in Ireland. The school called me at 10PM. I was already in my PJs. I love that I can say that I did my law school interviews in my pyjamas

Once, for an internship with Sesame Street and it was a lot of fun! But I prefer in person interviews. However, I wonder how many employers are willing to do interviews for those who live exceptionally far out of the area they are interviewing for ... for example, I'm based in the UK for now but would like to find a job in NYC at some point, and am thinking my only option is to apply for a bunch of jobs, have interviews lined up and fly there for those. Ugh.

Hey Julie, I've done a lot of phone interviews and I've had some go great and some go bad. I think your voice should be that as an interview but try to sound upbeat and not like your dragging - you want to show personality but still be formal. As in any interview have your resume in front of you and even a list of accomplishments that you have rehearsed in case you are asked for examples. Make sure the TV and radio are off, you're somewhere quiet. I know this is weird but I was told by my mass comm teacher that smiling when you are talking actually is communicated over your voice and puts the person on the other end at ease. Also, make sure you as close the conversation you ask what the process is for deciding who to interview face-to-face. I hope this helps and good luck!

Yes, IT people are usually screened by phone before they are ever brought in to interview. Usually done by one of the senior technical people and if you don't pass that then no face-to-face interview.

I've had one for my current job. I had 2 interviews prior by the manager of my store, and then the phone interview was done by the district manager. It was really nice. Especially with the two interviews I'd already done... I pretty much had an idea what he was going to ask, and what he was looking for, what previous experience he needed to hear about. Then most of it was telling me what I would have to do on a daily basis, and whatever else was important.

i've had several, but they've always been used as screeners to set up in-person interviews. i dislike them, personally. for some reason, interviewers (typically from an HR department) don't feel like they need to be polite or personable at all over the telephone. a few of the phone interviews actually turned me off to the companies so much that i later called back to cancel the in-person. if they can't be nice on the phone to potential employees, why would they treat them any better once they work there, y'know?

Only as an initial screening interview. It was rather brief, so I was happy they didn't make the candidates come in to the office. I don't think I would enjoy it for a full-length interview. I think it would put a candidate at a disadvantage, not being able to see and be seen by a potential employer. I wonder.. has anyone used a webcam for a long-distance interview?

Twice. Once when I was interviewing for a summer job that was pretty far from where I went to school. I was on speaker with three people, and there was a slight delay. It was awful! The other was just an obvious screening one. The interviewer only asked two or three questions that had obvious right or wrong answers like, "Are you organized?" or something.

I feel like phone interviews don't allow recruiters to get a comprehensive picture of me but its a necessary evil for vetting applicants. I feel much more comfortable in in-person interviews, even though I can refer to notes on the phone.

yes , I have had a few. I find that it is very inforative for the interview and you. They tell you want they are looking for and you can see if they are a good fit for your skills.

I actually prefer them for an initial interview vs. going out to the office to just meet the HR Rep, then possibly having to go back out to the office to meet the hiring manager or team for the second or even third interview.

Yes, for my current position - I had two phone interviews. The first was for the corporate HR to get to know me and me to tell them about my background and then second for them to tell me more about the position and where I will be stationed. I like both interviews because it gave me a great understand and clarification moreso than the ad did. I also, like the fact that it seem they were interested in getting to know me before they bought me in. Once, I was interviewed in person, I felt more at ease and very prepared.
