How to Volunteer While Earning a Steady Paycheck

While the Peace Corps is a one-of-a-kind program that has been known to instill positive change in its participants, not everyone is able to commit two years away from their established lives or afford to give up her paycheck. If you're someone with a big heart and prefers to give back with time rather than money, but have little room in your calendar for volunteering, then you may consider pursuing a volunteer opportunity through the company who signs your paychecks. Discover how this is possible when you

.

More companies are beginning to offer paid-volunteer opportunities, and these new initiatives are geared toward Millennials' desire to work for companies that value giving back. Skill-based volunteerism has proven to be career enhancing for the employees who accept the challenge. Workers who aren't usually in leadership positions get a shot at more responsibility and greater exposure to senior members of the company. This is awesome! Law firms invoke volunteerism through having pro bono efforts, which I love so much. However, it is great that some companies are trying to find ways to reward their employees for giving back to the community.

Man, I wish my company did this. My boss flat out forbade me from volunteering with the Red Cross in the Katrina aftermath (for 2-3 weeks without pay). It was hinted that I would be fired. These new initiatives are geared toward Millennials' desire to work for companies that value giving back. Finally! A statement about 'Millenials' that actually applies to me!
