I'm Asking: Have You Ever Had a Drink While on the Clock?

I'm Asking: Have You Ever Had a Drink While on the Clock?

It's been said that drinkers earn more on average than those who say no and if that's true, the characters on AMC's Mad Men must be making a fortune. The show captures the wild business of advertising in the 1960s and is filled with martini lunches, post meeting whiskeys and brainstorming with a bottle. Clearly the amount of drinking in the show is greatly exaggerated (I'm not sure anyone would perform in a meeting after downing five cocktails), but it got me thinking about guzzling on work time. Have you ever busted out a bottle during office hours?

I'm the same as Berlin... it's hard to avoid! Although if it's a slow night I'll charge people the $5 then take a shot of water so I can keep the money :)

Oh, poop. I just saw that Mad Men was linked at the bottom of the post. Now, I just feel silly.

I don't have a job, but even if I did, I'm too weaksauce to be able to go back to being productive after a drink or two. Also, I just want to note that I have never seen the show, but the picture for this post is from Mad Men! :D Hahaha.

Every year each department in our firm is given money for team building events. Last year we bought many bottles of wine and had wine and cheese parties throughout the year in the afternoons. My co-workers and I also regularly order drinks when we go out to lunch to an actual restaurant. And yes there have been a few times when we've come back to work a little buzzed.

I work in advertising too and we loooove our margaritas! We have a margarita machine in the kitchen and by noon on Friday I start getting a lot of, "Hey, are you going to make margaritas today???" Actually one of our account execs got a lot of drink recipes off Yum and they became office faves. Nobody ever gets drunk or anything, but it's so fun to kick back and relax every once in a while!

I too work in the television/creative industry. At least a 4-5x a year there are little work celebrations with booze. Sometimes it's as small as mimosas in the morning to celebrate the remodeling of our reception area; or beer, wine & appetizers to celebrate a successful project; the 1x a year "Employee Appreciation" where it was a much bigger catered event w/ a large selection of beers & wines; the occasional "Mobile Liquor Cart" that gets wheeled around the office for no reason; and occasionally an up & coming artist will come & perform. Then THEIR management people usually cater in snacks & drinks! My favorite was when an artist came & had catered fancy mexican & a RENT-A-RITA (portable frozen margarita machine)! Oh, and there used to be a guy in another department who'd get his martini shaker out & mix drinks about twice a month. You could partake if you pitched in some $. But sadly he left the company. :(All those drinking opportunities, and I think there has only been TWICE that I've ever drank more than 1 or 2 & gotten a buzz. The first time I got a buzz I just walked to the library after work & read for a while until I felt better about driving! The second time was a day I rode my bike! Haha... That was just a slight buzz though, so I went ahead & rode home!I LOVE MY JOB!

I work in IT, and when our team finishes a large project, the boss usually treats us to a bottle of champagne/prosecco. There's eight people sharing the bottle, so nobody gets drunk, but it's a nice treat after so much hard work.

I have drank at lunch before... once I was having an awful day and was waiting for my to go order and grabbed a shot of shot of Jager before leaving. It was hot so I told the bartender to put it on ice and I'd be back at 5 to finish it off and I surely did. And of course a few times with other coworkers I have a margarita or glass of wine. But only one glass!! Oh and there was that one time I regrettably ordered a Texas Tea (some version of a Long Island's) and couldn't hardly walk out of the door on the one. I ended up not going back to work claiming to be ill that day!

I used to work at a company who kept beer and champagne around. They busted out the champagne a few times while I was there, and it was great. :)

I used to when I worked as an assistant event planner. It was a lot of fun. Now I work in a very structured big company so I would never get away with it.

All the time. Just one or two never there to get trashed. In NYC we would get wasted before they inventoried the alcohol from the party!

one of my old jobs (like 5+ years ago) my co-worker and i went to lunch and had a microbrew somewhere - but other than that - nope. i think that with the work that i do now - i can't afford to drink - i work with budgets and numbers and not that i'd get drunk during lunch, i think that i would mess things up and that's not a good thing.

I've had drinks on plenty of occasions at after work functions, but only once when I was really working. My senior year of college one of our professors took our small class out for lunch and drinks. I had two drinks and rolled on over to the courthouse where I worked (it was a SMALL college town). I wasn't drunk and it wasn't obvious I'd been drinking other than the fact I was a bit nicer than normal.

Heeell yeah! But that's 'cause everyone wants to do shots and drinks with the bartender lol. A lot of times it's "i'll buy one for you but I don't want one myself" haha.

Drinking with work is different than pulling a bottle outta your drawer and swigging. Being drunk at work is a definite no-no in my book.

We have a lot of cocktail parties for potential clients, and I could drink; but my tolerance has slipped a lot lately, so I don't. Who knows what I would do! Water with lime fills in nicely for a gin and tonic. At Christmas we had an end-of-year review of our work and my boss brought in eggnog with rum; that's the only time I remember there being alcohol in the office. I just couldn't indulge; it was too weird.
