I'm Asking: How Often Do You Write Checks?

I'm Asking: How Often Do You Write Checks?

This Christmas my little sister gifted me a fabulous new wallet, which came with a matching checkbook cover. When I saw it I giggled, and my dad immediately said, "Hey! I want that. I'm the only one around here who writes checks anymore!" For the most part, he was right. I write a check for my rent, and select utilities (like garbage and water), but I pay the rest of my bills online and use my debit card for shopping transactions.

Despite my lack of usage, Consumer Reports says we shouldn't write the check off just yet. Word is the United States wouldn't be able to do away with checks any time before 2028.

How often do you whip out the checkbook?

I pay the majority of my bills through my bank's online bill payer or direct debit for utilities. Most of my checks last year were for my son's school expenses.

The last check I wrote was to a friend of mine that fixed my fence back in August 2009.

I think the last time I used my checkbook was to write a check for the balance of our property taxes...the escrow was $4.76 off, so I wrote a check to make up the difference. Other than that, we pay for everything online or with the credit card.

FFunny story- I got a wallet for Christmas too that fits a checkbook. I figured I should carry checks with me for emergency purposes (like when my debt card gets demagnetized). I only write checks for rent, utilities, cell phone bill and my credit card bill. I actually would like to use them more.

Only one. For some strange reason I can't pay for my water bill online. Grrrr!

I use the bank issued checks through my bank's web bill pay. Its great, they just sent out my second mortgage check (which is through a bank that only let's you pay online if you have a checking account with them) and my water bill. It really does eliminate checks because you can even send them to your mom or something like that.

I pay most bills online, but write a check for the mortgage, water bill, car/motorcycle payment, basically just the things i want a good record of payment for.

Rent, Car Insurance & Registration, and if I owe money to someone (I rarely have cash on me). That's pretty much it.

Same here -- occasionally. Property tax bills, medical co-pays, homeowner's insurance, etc.

I pay everything online through my bank, I even talked my landlord in taking a bank issued check, it's guaranteed money.

My mom's name is on a loan that I couldn't get by myself, so I write her a check every month for the payment. I pay rent and utilities online and use my debit card for shopping.

I'm with the rent check only folks. All other bills are paid online for easier tracking and timely payment. Very occasionally, a check is written to a friend if they're fronting the cost for something upfront (like, chipping in for a friend's bachelorette party or something).

Rent check only! I used to live in an apartment complex that would take credit cards- I miss those days.

I was moving away from checks to pay bills, rarely using them unless it was to pay personal stuff to people and the like. However, I think I will be moving back to using them because I want proof, other than the bank's confirmation number, that I actually paid my bills. If things get messed up, I wonder how much I can rely on the bank (that messed up) to find the problem and solve it.

I write Once or twice a month, for property taxes, water bill, or a copay for the doctors. That is only because they don't do online payments or charge a fee for it.
