I'm Asking: What Annoyed You During Tax Time?

I'm Asking: What Annoyed You During Tax Time?

Tax day has come and gone, yay! Now, let's get some complaining out of our taxed systems. Unless it's your job, doing taxes is probably the worst part of earning a living. Tax software can be less than intuitive, making your taxes a very time-consuming project, and if you need to chat with the IRS or your state's franchise tax board? Forget it, you need to set aside a serious chunk of your time just to wait on the phone.

Did anything happen during this tax time that made your jaw clench with annoyance?

I don't understand why if I'm a dependent and I didn't make very much money at all last year, I would owe a couple hundred? I really don't understand the whole tax system. They make it so complicated!! Luckily TurboTax had me input the $300 check I got last year from the stimulus, which evened out my taxes to $0. So I didn't get anything. I also give money to charity and such but it never seems to make sense to itemize those deductions. Oh yeah, I moved at the end of last year but never worked in my new state where they have state taxes...there were all these forms but I just didn't fill them out since I didn't work in the state. I gave them my new address though! We'll see what happens....I'm a confused tax mess :(

My husband and I always file as soon as we can after we receive our W-2's. This year was no different BUT we purchased a house and we are eligible for the $8000 tax credit that we can claim on last years tax return which hadn't been announced when we filed. So, we filed an amended return but still haven't gotten the money yet. But of course they already took out the money that we did owe and we still don't know the status of our credit. It better come soon!

I had to do a couple of different forms, because I moved. My hubby and I went to the library to print everything off (we don't have internet at home and decided we'd rather mail them in than put all of our sensitive information on a shared computer at the library). Federal went fine, but the state that we had moved from had all sorts of bizarre forms to fill out that we hadn't printed out. So we had to make another trip to the library. But we got them finished and everything was OK; overall we are getting a couple of hundred back. :)

Doing taxes is a serious pain at my house. We can never find anything! Also, I don't think anyone will be getting anything back this year - long story short, the IRS screwed up and gave us money [which we didn't ask for, and we questioned them about it, but they said to take it b/c we were owed the money - so we did], but then came back a year and half later asking where the money was. Apparently they weren't supposed to give it to us, but by then the money was gone [we had serious debt to pay off!]. So now they're taking money from everywhere to *make* us pay back the money + interest - like we stole it or something - for THEIR mistake...and now I'm pretty sure all 3 of us are going to be audited just because of the incident. Grrr....

Well I live in Florida so I didn't have to pay state tax which is nice but I was frustrated this year because it seems I didn't have any life changes, wage changes, and paid the same amounts for intrest and property taxes and for some reason I ended up getting back about $1,000 less then the year before! I donated more this past year too! I want to know when our bailout check is coming! I want another stimulus check!

I also got duped by the fees on turbo tax. I had to enter everything twice because I got to the end and said hell no I'm not paying $30 for state, so I had to find another site where I could do my state ones for less.

I had to fill out a part-year resident state tax form for Indiana even though I only earned money in this state this year, so I had to fill out a bunch of papers where I put the same number about a thousand times. It made it so much more complicated.

my mother-in-law gave all of our paperwork to her accountant but doctored it up a bit before she handed it off. kind of slowed down the process and screwed somethings up.

here's my annoyance. i went to H&R block to have them to my taxes, and first off, the guy locked himself out of the office so i had to go back like 2 hours later. then when he was doing my taxes, he did them wrong, told me that my company issued a bad W-2 and told me i owed a ridic amount of money. i got up and left, because i KNEW that he was wrong. it doesn't make you feel good about things when you're going to a tax professional that's nationally recognized, and they tell you everything's wrong and that you owe when you don't. long story short i went back to a different person, got my taxes done, and got money back.

God, yes. I did my taxes very early this year and I'm glad I did. I used an online service, but my birthday kept getting rejected by the IRS. I thought if I kept trying, it would eventually go through. Nope. I called up the IRS and they said that my birthday did not match the one attatched to my SS #. Scared the crap out of me. I had to march down to the Social Security Center (what fun) and have them change my information back to normal. Very frustrating and scary experience. But once I received my new Social Security card, I resubmitted my return and everything was OK. I never want to have to go through that again. Just the thought that someone screwed up such important information (seemingly randomly) pissed me off more than anything else.
