I'm Asking: What's Your DIY Ambition?

I'm Asking: What's Your DIY Ambition?

Do it yourself (DIY) projects have traditionally been reserved for activities like cooking, sewing, and home improvement. Where we feel we can skimp on the expert fees are often in the areas we think don't carry as much weight on our finances. For instance, it's probably not so likely that you'll attempt a legal case on your own, unless of course you have a law degree. Still, in the wake of the recession, it seems DIY is becoming more popular, even in areas that require some expertise.

Obviously, there's a little more risk involved in taking on your legal issues without an attorney than there is in home redecorating without an interior designer. Legal jargon isn't easy to digest — but if you can, you're saving a ton in attorney fees. You might just be able to teach yourself the basics to DIY in an expert field simply by reading, studying, and getting online with educational software. So, if you could become an expert in a career field to save some cash — I want to know, what's your DIY ambition?

As a new home owner, I'm really excited to get down to DIY in the home! First project is sanding and painting my old bedroom furniture for our upcoming baby. After that, probably art and light yard work -- I'll be a little low on time and funds in a few months!

We love to DIY and have remodeled almost all of our 1950's cape cod- but the kitchen awaits. We're hoping to be able to complete the small space- including some new appliances- for about $2k thanks to our tax return.

We DIY almost everything, mostly because we like the feeling of being self-sufficient. I have started making my own scented candles, baking my own bread, cutting my own hair and my husband's, doing my own manis, and grooming my own dog. When we installed our woodstove, we did that ourselves, too. My husband's a mechanic and is teaching me about cars, so we fix our own vehicles when they break down as well. This spring, I plan on growing all my own veggies and I want to install my own insulation in the attic. Probably the only services I pay for are my bikini wax (I'm not going to do THAT myself) and I guess if I needed a lawyer for something I'd probably hire one. As far as taxes and finance, we do all that ourselves as well.

We DIY our home-remodeling all the time. However, my grandfather is a contractor so we do ask him to help and supervise when we tackle the trickier projects such as ripping up our floors and such (like we did last month.) right now we're doing simpler stuff like re-painting the hall, bedrooms and bathroom. I'm sure our ceiling is next. It's leaking in three places so I can either fix it or shower underneath it and save on my water bill. ;P

Right now, I'm trying bread baking. It's proven to be quite difficult as I've already thrown out a few loaves of failbread. But I'm sticking to it. The three loaves (out of six!) that did work, were absolutely delicious!

Savvy I want to landscape my backyard. It is big for my area but sooooo ugly. I would love to design it myself and then put all the plants in too. Sadly I have a serious lack of time, knowledge, and money.
