I'm Asking: Which of Your Employer's Policies Are Unfair?

I'm Asking: Which of Your Employer's Policies Are Unfair?

Companies everywhere have tightened their belts in recent months, and they are right to keep a close watch on cash flow in uncertain economic times. A friend of mine works for a company that used to subsidize half of his parking expenses, and they recently did away with the perk for everyone except vice presidents and above.

It makes sense to me that the company would drop this perk to save money, but it doesn't make sense that it wasn't cut for every employee — especially because senior staff salaries are usually several times their subordinates. Are there any policies at your office that you think are unfair?

OK mine is relatively minor to all the cutbacks on hours but I just started a new job and found out I'm not eligible for paid holidays, vacation or floating holidays until I've been here 6 months. Argh.

yeah. my old job went out of business and severance was if you worked 6months it was 8 weeks of checks. less was 4weeks, worked there for 5 1/2 months.

my employer is holding my first paycheck... until i stop working here! also, they don't stop a coworker from smoking in the office, but that's not really a policy. makes my asthma go crazy.

I'm a full time employee who is now working less than 25 hours a week, and I'm hourly. Of course they expect us to do the same amount of work, and I can no longer pay my rent. It's terrible, because I was working 40+ hours a week, and every week I work less and less and less... :(

Wow, I'm feeling a little more thankful for my job right now. So far we haven't had any of these problems. But don't be jealous, I have a sucky boring job with low pay. Taadie, that's fricking ridiculous! That would so not fly at my office. Why don't they just dispense with the b-day parties? Spectra, I agreee about that smoke break policy! The smokers here always get a bunch of smoke breaks (including my supervisor), but if I chat with one of my coworkers for two minutes, I get the evil eye from that supervisor (she will literally stand in the middle of the hallway and stares until you stop talking! Freak!) Telewyo, that does sound illegal. Especially, if you have a contract or agreement that details your salary.

Man, times are tough! I'm probably in the same boat as everyone else: more work with no more income to compensate it. Not to mention, the extra works means I have to work on holidays and weekends.

The owner of the company cut our paid sick days from 5 a year to 2 a year. It's bad enough that we barely accrue one week vacation over the course of a year. He then apparently bought new art for his office, booked a 3 week international vacation (he has been on two already this year) and said he doesn't care about low morale. I understand that he is allowed to spend his money his way, but the timing was really really crappy on his part. They also just laid off 3 people and another 3 have quit these past two weeks.

I don't think we have any super-unfair policies, but there are a few things that a lot of us complain about: we don't have an employee parking lot, so we have to park in the general public lot, which means I have to walk almost a block to get into work. Also, we aren't allowed to listen to the radio at work because it could "increase errors". It really sucks because a lot of my work can get repetitive and having some tunes would really help. Also, I hate that we're automatically deducted a 30 minute lunch break...several times, I'm so busy I don't get a lunch break at all while SOME people take 45 minute lunches and still only get deducted the 30 minutes. One policy that I think is really fair is that we have no smoke breaks allowed. That way, the smokers don't get to have a bajillion 5 minute smoke breaks during their shifts. They have to smoke during their lunch break and their morning break.

I'm with ilanac13. There is a hiring freeze at my job PLUS our annual raise for 2008 was taken away by the governor (frowning heavily). Some departments have gone to flex time and there's re-organization projects all over.

well so far i don't think that we've been hit too hard with anything getting taken from us. the HARDEST though is that we're on a pay freeze and the really frustrating thing is that since there's no position for me to move up to, and i can't get a raise then it means that i'm kind of in a rut. yes i should be thankful that i have a job, but my rent doesn't stay the same, so i'm in a jam....

My company started taking money out of our salaries to pay for birthday cakes. You can ask them not to take the money out of your check if you want. I dont think its unfair because we are a non-profit but it is annoying to think I will get charged for a cake I rarely eat. Eh, its tough times.

Ouch! Nothing so serious for me. Just no more personal e-mail, which is really annoying. I can't check my g-mail because I may spread some 'inside unmonitored' information that my boss can't check on.

And I forgot to mention that she gets paid hourly... so her yearly income has gone down significantly.

Luckily, I don't have any complaints about unfair policies at work. I'm really thankful! However, my sister has a "full time job" where they won't allow people to work more than 32 hours a week anymore. If they do, they will get into trouble -- even if they actually have work that needs to be done. She used to work 40+ hours...

telewyo, that does sound illegal! I'd call someone on that one.The only idiotic policy at my work is as a result of someone else's stupidity (and alcoholism.) I work at a bar, and we're *technically* not allowed to bring in outside drinks (ie, good coffee,) in case we pour liquor into them. Umm, hi. I can make a gin & tonic or vodka & tonic and make it look like it's a 7up. Or a Rum & Coke and say it's coke. Someone who's dishonest will be dishonest, keeping me from having caffeine from an outside drink only makes me pissy, not less likely to be drink.

For the last 6 months we've been slow on work and the two of us who are younger engineers have had our salaries pro-rated when we didn't have a full 40 hours worth of work...so essentially even though we are salaried employees they were treating us as hourly. I haven't made my full salary on a paycheck for almost 6 months. Now we got a huge project with a tight deadline and they sat us down and told us to expect 50-60 hour weeks for the next 4 months but "since we are salaried they are unable to compensate us for the extra hours". How fair is that!! We also think it may be illegal!
