Important Lessons to Learn From Working

What's the Biggest Lesson You've Learned From Working?

Now that Fall is creeping up on us, this got me thinking of all the students getting ready to pack up and start their new school year. I remember learning a lot at school, but to me, the bulk of the important lessons came post graduation. That's because I'm finally getting a taste of what "real life" is like, and am dealing with issues that can affect my finances instead of just my GPA. There's definitely more on the line when you're done with school.

I'm asking, what's the biggest lesson you've learned from working?

I hate to say it, but it is all about who you know. Even if you meet a person once, you never know when/where/how they might pop back into your professional life. First impressions really are key. And no matter what, try to remain professional. It's easy to lose your cool, especially in this economy, but it's just not worth it. Finally, I wish someone told me to actually use my vacation time! I'm sitting on 6 weeks of time and not accumulating any more because I didn't take vacation and now I can't due to other commitments. Try to find a balance and work on maintaining that balance. I've been working full time for 14 years now and still have a difficult time with balance.

I've learned that in most cases, it's not what you know, but who you know. In the cases where it's what you know that counts... Shine, shine, shine, because you only have a few seconds to make your first impression, at that can make or break you.
