Molly Ringwald on When to Get Your Hair Cut

Your Two Cents: Getting Your Hair Cut Before an Interview?

In '80s icon Molly Ringwald's new life advice book, Getting the Pretty Back ($18), she shares a few tips for getting pretty for an interview. She advises:

Opt for a professional blow dry rather than an actual haircut. It's not the time for a radical makeover. Confidence is key here, and you don't want to run the risk of feeling like you're someone else.

I keep myself on a tight beauty budget so I schedule my cuts around big events — like weddings, birthdays, and, if I have them, interviews — because they make me feel confident and attractive. Of course, I've been going to the same stylist for years and play it pretty safe. What's your take on cropping before an important interview?

I would do it as long as the style I was going for was pretty close to what I have now. I wouldn't decide to experiment or go super-short right before an interview because it's just one more thing to be nervous about.

I think that getting your hair cut and styled before an interview is a great idea - but ONLY if you have a backup. If you've never gone super-short before, then right before an interview is not the time to experiment. I'd say that if you're getting a cut that still allows you to pull your hair back into a sensible bun or sophisticated ponytail then go for it - the worse that'll happen is that you'll have to fall back on your fall-back hairstyle.

skigurl - agree with that i hate my hair when it's first cut as i like to get quite a lot off if getting your hair cut gives you confidence then yes - great but before a big event the last thing i'd do would be get it cut i'd be more likely to wait till after the event :)

i'd say do it as long as you don't leave the salon every time feeling regret or hate your cut for a few weeks...i have a long style so when i get it cut it's not usually drastically different and so i know i wouldn't feel less confident...but don't go and get a major change before an interview!! it could backfire!!

Hey! I just got my hair cut and guess who is wearing the same hairdo? Molly! Smart redheads think alike. I wonder if I should re-do my profile photo...
