Money Tip: Stick to Bank ATMs For Safety

ATMs will give you cash in a flash, but not all of them are created equal. If you're grabbing a cheap cup of coffee at a convenience store and notice the shady looking ATM in the corner, think twice before inserting your debit card. Sometimes we're really in a crunch and aren't able to cruise down the street and use a bank's machine, but don't get in to the habit of getting convenience cash.

Experts say that it's easier for hackers to tamper with these machines and steal your PIN. The videotaping and security measures at banks make them less susceptible to thieves, while convenience ATMs are maintained by a third party.

Very good info! I always try to get cash out of a bank's ATM. I always question those in gas stations...shady, very shady.

There aren't many ATMs around here that aren't at a bank. I'll remember that when I travel.

I second that MindayH. I stopped using the '3rd party' ATMs a long time ago.

Living in NYC - sometimes you just stop at the ATB in the corner store when you need a few bucks for a cab, and well, i can say from personal experience that i've had my bank put a block on my card a few times becuase the machine has been 'compromised'. it's nice to know that my bank is watching out, but it also makes me nervous that someone had my information. luckily (knock on wood) nothing bad has ever happened. i usually try to stick to the real banks to do my withdrawls etc....

If I can't use my bank atm, I try and get cash back from a walgreens or cvs - those "3rd party" atms creep me out
