More Couples Meet at Work Than in College

The Grind: Has the Workplace Become the New Kegger?

When I was in college, my girlfriends and I definitely didn't have marriage on the mind. Neither did my guy friends, for that matter. Sure, it could have a little bit to do with the fact that where I went to school wasn't exactly a breeding ground for serious relationships. But it also has a lot to do with the growing trend of marrying later and using college for its opportunities (learning and otherwise).

Because we're looking at college as a starting point for our adult lives, most couples are now finding love in the office and that's a big change from just 15 years ago. Recent reports show that 18 percent of the surveyed married or committed couples met at work, just 14 percent met in school or college. When you consider that 15 years ago 15 percent said they met in the office and 23 percent met in school.

Researchers also site credential inflation as a reason for holding out to marry; the more qualifications you need the more time you're in school and don't have time for a serious relationship. Do you know anyone that's met her boyfriend or husband at work? I sure do.

I met my husband at work - he was my boss! But I quickly got a promotion and moved to another location so we had an easier time with the work issues. (And, it was nice to have a built-in person who could discuss work issues with me!)Nearly ten years later, we are still happily together! :) (We no longer work in the same place, or even in the same state, however!)

I met my husband in college (9 years ago), and we have a lot of friends who also met their spouses at that same college. But it was a very small college that catered to a particular type of person. It was easy to find a good partner when your only options are people who you already have a lot in common with. I can't imagine how difficult that would be out in the great wide world of work.

Although it was a rule of mine to not date someone at work I met my boyfriend at work 4 1/2 years ago. In his circle of friends (all of whom work for the same company, and most of them knew each other long before working for the company) almost all couples met each other at work and are now married, one couple met through someone from work, and there is only 1 of these couples that did not meet at work...So I can definitely relate to this trend.

I have never dated anyone from any job, the male employees are always low. At my last job there were no single and straight men, all the cool guys were gay and married. I can't do anything with that.

Hubby and I met at work. :) We both worked for the same company, but different stores...so when the region had a week-long course for the managers, we met there. :)

My bf & I met at work! He trained me, and then I think he was partly attracted to the talent & effort I put into my job! We've since went seperate ways working-wise (we met while doing live tv production, and I now work in post production) but we still share that common connection for the working in tv & the industry. We can relate to each other's jobs.

My boyfriend and I met at work 3 years ago - apparently he had been trying to meet me for 6 months before we actually did ;)Thanks to outsourcing though, we no longer work for the same company - he's got a much better job than his old one!
