It's always a nice surprise to discover that behind some of these pretty Hollywood faces, lies the minds of intellectuals. Not only does Natalie Portman have an impressive movie resume, you can sneak in the title of scientist among her life achievements. The beauty can proudly call herself an Oscar winner and summa cum laude graduate of Harvard, where she studied neuroscience.
One of her former teachers, Abigail A. Baird, told the New York Times “there are very few who are as inherently bright as Natalie is, who have as much intellectual horsepower, who work as hard as she did. She didn’t take a single thing for granted.”
Doing well in school isn't always for naught; some of you may think that way because you may feel that you barely retained any knowledge from classes, but being a dedicated student teaches you something really valuable — self-discipline. And you never know when your past lessons come in handy. For example, Natalie apparently uses a lot of what she learned from psychology in the roles she plays.
I don't think learning has to stop when you graduate from school. Professional development is one way to continue your education and improve yourself. If you're not learning, you might find yourself stuck in a stalemate in your life or your career. Natalie took time off her career to go to college and continued to challenge herself intellectually by taking graduate courses at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Use Natalie as an inspiration and start pushing yourself today by taking a class, attending an informational event, or picking up a new skill.
