Never Make These Interview Mistakes

Never Make These Ten Interview Mistakes

Interviewing can be a deal-breaker from the point-of-view of all parties involved. You can have the best resume to come out of your graduating class, but if your interview skills leave something to be desired than your candidacy will likely be put in jeopardy. The same goes for a job hunter who's weighing her options — a company could have the most impressive website and on-paper reputation, but if your interviewer is someone you can't wait to get away from, you might leave wondering if you'd be equally incompatible with the other employees.

While CareerBuilder's survey that resulted in their Top 10 Interview Mistakes only reports the faults of job hunters, the examples interviewers acknowledged as real-life mistakes are pretty unbelievable. The top ten are hardly subtle in their inappropriate nature, and it's safe to say you should never mimic them unless you're trying to not get the job.

  • Candidate answered cell phone and asked the interviewer to leave her own office because it was a "private" conversation.
  • Applicant told the interviewer he wouldn't be able to stay with the job long because he thought he might get an inheritance if his uncle died - and his uncle wasn't "looking too good."
  • The job seeker asked the interviewer for a ride home after the interview.
  • The applicant smelled his armpits on the way to the interview room.

There are six more on the list so just

  • Candidate said she could not provide a writing sample because all of her writing had been for the CIA and it was "classified."
  • Candidate told the interviewer he was fired for beating up his last boss.
  • When the applicant was offered food before the interview, he declined saying he didn't want to line his stomach with grease before going out drinking.
  • An applicant said she was a "people person" not a "numbers person" -- in her interview for an accounting position.
  • During a phone interview the candidate flushed the toilet while talking to hiring manager.
  • The applicant took out a hair brush and brushed her hair.

How about writing a post about common mistakes people make - the ones that we don't actually see as mistakes but could cost us a job offer. Rather than these obvious mistakes. I mean...seriously...

Lol Divinelight!!!! One time I had an interview, and the interviewer asked if he could run and pick up his daughter from day care and if I'd wait... He left the building was gone nearly the whole hour and had his friend call his office to do a phone interview with me while I wait...People were walking by his office and asking me where the guy was, when i told them he left me there... his co-workers were stunned... when he returned he called his friend on speakerphone and asked how i did... the friend said great!....I got offered the job later but passed!

My professor said she once interviewed a guy for a job as a journalist and he was wearing tin foil under his clothes to protect his body from aliens! Aside from that though, he was perfectly normal and had had a great phone interview. She almost hired him just from the phone interview, but decided to meet him first. Good thing too!

Ditto Martini Rosso. People can't really be this crazy/stupid. It was funny though. I would have loved to see some of those in person like the reaction to the uncle one.

The CIA one is silly because, even if the CIA bit was true (and probably isn't), couldn't she write something now as a sample? When people are this crazy it makes you wonder why it is so hard for a good employee to find a job! I want to see one of these for interviewers! I was in an interview and the woman was greasy, sweaty, and wearing a wife beater top and sweatpants IN A LAW FIRM. She told me there was no job growth, the work was boring, and they were desperate b/c people kept leaving. Then she offered me the job...I turned her down. :o

I can't imagine someone thinking any of these things were okay to do at an interview. That said... my interview for where I'm workign now consisted of going to every memeber of our staff and explaining why I'd be a good candidate for the job. That was fun... and nerve wracking. On the phone interview, my boss's assistant requested that I wear tiedye and wear tennis shoes, as I'd be running a mile for time. Luckily she was joking.

You should see some of the craziness people put on their resumes - it is amazing that they even get jobs.

Not sure whats wrong with this one, altho the others are funny: "Candidate said she could not provide a writing sample because all of her writing had been for the CIA and it was classified."

I suck at interviewing b/c I get nervous and have a hard time talking about myself, but this list was not helpful at all. It was funny though--and at least I'm not the worst interviewee. Why is your cell phone even ON during an interview?!?

Brooklynbee I'm with you, who would EVER do these things? If anything I've been interviewed by some pretty weird people who have said some out of line things in my presence.

Yeah this honestly isn't helpful at all and not even amusing. Anyway, reminds me of that Harold and Kumar movie, when Kumar was sabotaging his interview...

I am sorry, I couldn't stop laughing - the sad part is that it's actually things people have done. I guess no common sense. Who says I was fired for beating up my boss or that I won't be here long my uncle my die and leave me an inheritance.

LOL, who would actually do those things? I have had some job interviewers where the INTERVIEWER did weird things, though - which to me were red flags not to take the job. On one interview, the lady interviewing me said "Sorry I'm so crazy, but I have my period." Ha!
