Personal Assistant to Someone Famous

Would You Want to Be a Personal Assistant to Hollywood?

The Princeton Review praises being a 'Personal Assistant to Someone Famous' in their book, The Best Entry-Level Jobs. This surprises me a little — maybe I'm just cynical because of what I observed watching sparse moments of Hey Paula?

According to The Princeton Review, "It's a great job for people who want a glimpse at how the truly fabulous live. It's also a great way to break into glamour professions because of the many of the contacts you make—not the dry cleaner, necessarily, but many of the others—will be invaluable."

I imagine the hard-working assistants to celebs will be working overtime getting their bosses prepared for the Oscars on Sunday. The excerpt from The Princeton Review's book says that the jobs are generally more about the experience and other perks above the pay, to expect lots of extra hours, and the connections you establish can lead to jobs more suited to your talents (in fashion, styling, etc.).

It also points out that being a personal assistant to anyone, and especially to someone famous, is challenging because it usually involves "a volatile combination of extreme intimacy and extreme subservience." Do you think the job would be worth the connections?

You do make some great connections, but you also have absolutely no life of your own since it's all about their life. That is 24/7 literally, not loosely. And they don't pay a lot considering you're giving everything up. My cousin was a PA for a high celebrity and we never saw her for the 3 years she worked for her. She'd plan on coming for Christmas then have to cancel. It did help her get another job in entertainment, but it's not like it's the greatest job that she probably could've gotten otherwise.

After years working in a coffee shop I know my tolerance for demanding people. It's about 3 minutes, the amount of time it takes an order, ring it up and make the drink. No amount of contacts will ever tempt me to serve—I mean "assist"—anyone ever again.

I was a PA to a crazy Hollywood celebrity interior designer/actress b*tch for a week. It was horrible. She was high maintenance, bi-polar, yelled all the time, her house was always full of RANDOM people. She treated her dogs much better than she did us. She was only nice to one PA because that PA also happened to be writing her biography. Everybody in that business seems to be shady!

I'm already acting as some sort of PA to a lot of my colleagues even though it's not my job :/ I'd grab anything that pays better than what I have at the moment.

I would hate to be anyone's assistant. Celebrity or not.

I could barely stand to be an administrative assistant when I did that as a temp job for two months, so I highly doubt I could handle being a personal assistant!

SO I work at a 5 star hotel & also a 5 star restaurant now and this is as far as I will go with being someone b$#*h. Rich people/celebrities are some of the most horrible people you can ever deal with when things do not go as they want. Th word no can make them explode and you have to love the classic line " Do you know who I am!!!" yes Sir/Madame I do but I just cannot build another room/table for you on a sold out night.

Yeah I could do it. I did it before for my cousin who's a movie producer and his producer wife. I simply did what they asked then always went one step further to insure my butt was covered. You want me to pick up dinner at Spago (this was back in the early 90's)- sure I'll hit Spago and pick up a variety of entrees then hit one more top-notch restaurant just in case. And I'll go to the grocery store to make sure there's plenty of food for the personal chef to make what you really want when you decide that you really wanted a hot dog.The check was so good that I could ignore the ego and tantrums.

it can be a great networking gig, but you're SO busy with your celeb's tasks you don't have time to do your own...and you're prob not going to as many parties as you imagined...it DOES def all depend on the gig tho. sometimes you get really lucky and get lots of goodies and face time with important beeyawches.

No thanks, I have watched Kimora Lee's show and she is a b*tch and is terrible to her assistants and i wouldn't want to deal with her or her snotty kids or anyone that acted like that.

9 times out of 10, these people are way high maintenance and the pay is not what it should be. I know people who have held these positions, and also know some firms that staff for these positions, and they are INCREDIBLY difficult to fill because you are not expected to have a life. I know of people who felt it was a rough combination of having that up close view of the good life while at the same time not being able to actually have any of it for yourself. The example that comes to mind was a friend that traveled to a fabulous destination for New Year's Eve, but wasn't allowed to go out herself. She made all the arrangements for her employer, but had to stay in the hotel to make sure the kids were taken care of and that the driver was on time, etc.
