As the digital sector grows, jobs that rely on older technologies, such as newspaper reporters, mail carriers, and lumberjacks, are rapidly becoming obsolete.
A new study by CareerCast revealed the top 10 professions predicted to lose the most jobs by 2022, based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Mail carriers are most endangered, with a projected 28 percent decline by the year 2022. Farmers and meter readers will also see significant shrinkage, with an anticipated 19 percent decline for each within the next eight years.

BLS job description: Sort mail for delivery. Deliver mail on established route by vehicle or on foot.

Expected change in employment by 2022: -28%
Why it's disappearing: Increasing use of email and online bill paying will create a sharp decline in the amount of first-class mail sent, according to the BLS. Because of this, fewer and fewer postal workers will be needed.
BLS job description: Plan, direct, or coordinate the management or operation of farms, ranches, greenhouses, aquacultural operations, nurseries, timber tracts, or other agricultural establishments.

Expected change in employment by 2022: -19%
Why it's disappearing: Technological advances allow current farmers to accomplish the same tasks with fewer workers.
BLS job description: Read meter and record consumption of electricity, gas, water, or steam.

Expected change in employment by 2022: -19%
Why it's disappearing: As more and more companies install electronic meter readers that allow them to view meter data without going to the site, the number of actual readers needed will markedly decline.
BLS job description: Collect and analyze facts about newsworthy events by interview, investigation, or observation. Report and write stories for newspaper, news magazine, radio, or television.

Expected change in employment by 2022: -13%
Why it's disappearing: As online news flourishes, traditional newspapers continue to lose readership, subscriptions, and advertising revenue. When these papers dwindle, they're no longer able to hire as many reporters as they once needed.
BLS job description: Plan and sell transportation and accommodations for travel agency customers. Determine destination, modes of transportation, travel dates, costs, and accommodations required.

Expected change in employment by 2022: -12%
Why it's disappearing: Many travelers are now opting to plan their own vacations using online resources, instead of turning to an agent for help.
BLS job description: Use axes or chainsaws to fell trees using knowledge of tree characteristics and cutting techniques to control direction of fall and minimize tree damage.

Expected change in employment by 2022: -9%
Why it's disappearing: Technological advances requiring fewer workers — coupled with a declining demand for wood pulp as more traditional paper products go digital — means fewer lumberjacks are needed overall.
BLS job description: Provide personal services to ensure the safety, security, and comfort of airline passengers during flight. Greet passengers, verify tickets, explain use of safety equipment, and serve food or beverages.
Median salary: $37,240
Expected change in employment by 2022: -7%
Why it's disappearing: Flight attendants have suffered from cutbacks and airline mergers in recent years, and hiring projections for the coming decade don't indicate any positive changes on the horizon.
BLS job description: Set up, operate, or tend drilling machines to drill, bore, ream, mill, or countersink metal or plastic work pieces.
Median salary: $32,950
Expected change in employment by 2022: -6%
Why it's disappearing: Technological advances make it possible to produce the same amount of work with fewer drill-press operators. Additionally, gridlocked manufacturing hiring is hurting the the job market in general.
BLS job description: Set up and operate digital, letterpress, lithographic, flexographic, gravure, or other printing machines. Includes short-run offset printing presses.
Median salary: $34,100
Expected change in employment by 2022: -5%
Why it's disappearing: As more and more work is completed digitally, fewer workers producing paper products are needed.
Tax Examiner and Collector
BLS job description: Determine tax liability or collect taxes from individuals or business firms according to prescribed laws and regulations.

Expected change in employment by 2022: -4%
Why it's disappearing: New technologies allow companies to streamline the tax examining and collecting process, meaning they need to make fewer hires.
