How Would You Handle Someone Stealing Your Idea at Work?

Last night Quarterlife made its TV premiere, and while several aspects of the show were sort of hard to swallow (the cheesy mayonnaise fight Debra had with her guy's best friend, Dylan's controversial video blogging, etc.) there was some great content relating to handling work life.

Dylan works as an editorial associate, and her awful boss, Britney, steals an idea of Dylan's and presents it as her own to the entire company. Dylan doesn't speak up at the time, but later she privately clues in Britney's boss, who tells Dylan that her idea is a good one. Dylan still doesn't let it go and takes it a step further at an all-company meeting, where she reveals in a not-so-professional speech that it was her idea. The reaction? Silence and darting eyes, suggesting that Dylan is out of line.

I thought it was way out of line for Dylan to speak up the way she did, interrupting a meeting and with such an awkward speech? "I just wanted everyone to know I was smart." Ugh! What an unprofessional thing to say. Plus, Dylan was just having a self-righteous moment when she talked about her big "idea" and would not have pursued it. Her coworker, as slimy a move it may have been, recognized it as a viable idea for the magazine and savvily turned inspiration from a spoiled idealist into an actual presentation. It would have been much different if Dylan had developed the idea and shared it with her coworker as something she was going to present to the company.

First of all, I could never be an underling, only a boss. Second, if I were in Dylan's shoes, I'd like to think that I could be as sweet as pie to her everytime we crossed paths, all the while asking about "her" idea & how it was going. I mean EVERY TIME! Hopefully, she would get so sick of me & my feigned interest in "her" idea, she would tell the boss who's idea it really was just to get me to stop racking her conscience, assuming she found one at this point. If not, I think I would just keep killing her with kindness. Take the high road. I have no time for bitterness in my life.

she should have spoken up at the time in a non threatening way. it the episode the head boss askes her boss to make some layouts. Dylan should have spoken up and said she already made them, hence letting everyone know it was her idea without actually attacking the person who stole her idea.

I'm going to be the jerk and say that part of anybody's job is making their boss look better. (A good boss will say, "And Dylan came up with a great idea that I think will help the company blahblahblah....") Going to a supervisor to whine is a bad idea. It makes you look like you can't handle your own business. Finally, again, I'm going to be a jerk! If someone showed up to a professional office wearing what Dylan is wearing, I'd gently suggest that she dress more appropriately for work. That girl looks like she just rolled out of bed, and it conveys an apathetic message. The delivery was mean, but the message was spot-on.

Oh one other time I helped a friend at my work by suggesting a story idea and passing along my initial research. It was more appropriate for her line of work than mine. Anyway, she made it seems like it was her concept/research originally to the main reporter (I would admit if someone else had started the research and come up with the idea if I were in her shoes, friend or not!) so I briefly mentioned it to him and left it at that.

I had something like this almost happen to me once when I was working for a radio show as an associate producer. I asked the show's roving reporter what they thought about my idea (it was a live hit at an institutional restaurant celebrating its 25th anniversary...but also made sure to mention that the interview should tackle hard-hitting questions about their recent financial difficulties). Well, she slammed it saying it would sound like an "advertisement." Two days later when I was on another assignment it turns out the roving reporter was doing my story idea! Grrr, that REALLY annoyed me because not only did she make me feel stupid for suggesting that idea, I'm pretty sure she probably took credit for it when they were trying to think of ideas. I ended up not bringing it up with the boss since I wasn't 100% sure about the situation. To cope, I ranted about it to a couple of colleagues and got over it that way.

I am very fortunate with my bosses thus far. My current boss is very mindful to give credit where credit is due. She also is mindful to take blame when something is her fault. I aspire to be a boss like her someday. I thought Dylan should have stopped after talking to her boss' boss.

This happen to me a few years ago at my job's staff meeting where another co-worker presented "her" ideas of a future project we were working on. When the boss asked for opinions I spoke up and clearly let the office know which ideas were mine and which were hers. My boss subtlely reprimanded her and let her know that next time she should be more clear when presenting information to the staff. She was a bit embarassed and I had the best day ever. Eventually, she apologized.

I think it is better to stop at discussing the situation with the offender's supervisor. She looked like a whiny, unprofessional and there are other dignified ways to handle the situation. It has taken me a few job missteps to figure this out and learn to control my impulse to confront and destroy. I have a new attitude with my current job and have been happier, productive and quickly promoted. It was a lesson worth learning.

i worked at a retail store that sold furniture and twice a year they held a furniture contest. the person who sold the most pieces would get free merchandise. however, this retail store didn't train anyone to sell furniture. being a student studying home fashion i asked if i could train the staff on basic furniture knowledge and then the pieces we sold. no problem. go ahead. needless to say the furniture sales were up, morale was up, and everyone was having a good time in the store for a change. this "training" idea expanded to other products and it was going great. until the district manager came to town. low and behold the store manager presented an idea, her idea, to create a training program focusing on the home products. wonderful idea...let's do it. as for me? lil' ole me that had been training the staff for months and increasing sales...no love. it bothered me in the beginning, but in the end it was nothing. this person didn't have a clue where to start and i soon made an exit for the door. i go back every now and then to see what's going on with that "training" program. never really took off. go figure.
