Reader Tip: Keep Your Appliances in Their Best Shape

Dishing out extra dough to fix pricey appliances is a real pain so it's in your best interest to keep them in tip-top shape. Consumer Reports recently put out a helpful guide to making appliances last, but washing machines didn't make the list. Thank goodness for the Thrifty Tips — Getting The Most Out of Life group in the SavvySugar Community. Beachwalker advises:

To keep your washing machine new, every few months fill the machine with warm water and a pint of vinegar. This will clean out the hoses and stop clogging. This works for the dishwasher as well!

I put white vinegar in my dishwasher every time I do a load of dishes. I had a repair guy tell me to do that, when our dishwasher needed to be repaired. Works wonders! I'm going to start using it in the washing machine now too!

I use vinegar with every load, not a pint but just a little in the fabric softener cup to help keep things clean but also it softens your clothes, and takes out the static. Way cheaper and better for the environment than using those sheets and liquid fabric softener.

Yeah, I do that for my dishwasher too. Except that I use baking soda to kill the odors. It seems to work pretty well.

This totally works for the dishwasher! Especially if it starts to smell funky. Just run an empty load pouring vinegar into the "rinse" container and nothing else.
