2. Motor oil: If you change your own oil, take the old fluid to the proper recycling center—it can be refined and resold as recycled motor oil.

3. Corks: Need a reason to raise a glass? Recycled wine corks can be turned into shoe insoles, tiles and building insulation.

4. Brita filters: The outer casing is made of polypropylene plastic, which is not widely recycled in the United States. Drop off the filters at Whole Foods stores or mail them to Preserve to be made into toothbrushes.
